Trout River Environmental Committee Trout River Environmental Committee works to restore & conserve the natural integrity of our nine watersheds, and to promote good environmental stewardship.

We operate in the Stanley Bridge to Cavendish area of North Central Prince Edward Island, Canada. In 1999 TREC was incorporated with the stated purpose of restoring and conserving the natural integrity of the Trout River watershed and to promote good environmental stewardship in the drainage basin. Currently, TREC participates in a range of acitvities including watershed management, community engagement and environmental education.

Introducing our 2026 summer crew!

Bat Monitoring 🦇

There are several ways we monitor bats: collecting call data through bat detectors set up in strategic locations, driving surveys which involve attaching a monitor to a vehicle and driving at 30km an hour (just faster than a bat can fly), as well as colony counts.

Colony counts are the only survey which help us not only identify what species of bat are roosting in a location, but also how many are present. Colony counts are conducted by sitting outside a structure and counting how many bats emerge at sunset. This helps us get a better understanding of population density in our area, and overall population in North America.

TREC's Planting Seeds for Wildlife project benefits wildlife by providing improved native plant diversity and habitat, increasing much needed food sources and shelter. We are using a multifaceted approach to increasing native plant diversity in the TREC watershed area through native plant propagation, creating new native tree and shrub planting sites, planting pollinator species, rare species, and maintenance of past and current planting sites.

As part of this project we are propagating native plants, so far we have grown 500 native swamp milkweed, 20 sugar maple, 20 butternut, and 150 red oak. We also have an assortment of other native species including pollinator species which are being processed!

Thank you to the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund for supporting this project! If you would like to support this fund, you can do so by purchasing a conservation plate, or through hunting, trapping and fishing licences.

Thank you to the Hunter-Clyde Watershed Group .pei for helping with tree planting at a large site along Anderson's Creek! We also had The Wheatley River Improvement Group help out earlier this season, big thanks to these neighboring watershed groups for your assistance!

This planting is funded by and the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund, thank you for all of your support!

This project will serve to both enhance biodiversity and promote social impact. This will be achieved by increasing forested area around Anderson's Creek, where there is little buffer around one side of the stream.

This planting will increase biodiversity, adding species which are needed to support wildlife in this area, while also providing increased canopy cover, and improved bank support for this stream.

This planting will also promote a social impact in several ways; by giving community members the opportunity to help plant these native trees in the fall during a tree planting event, as well as the enjoyment of connecting with nature in this space after this project is completed.

1500 trees and shrubs have been planted at this site and others this season!

As part of this project we have protected each deciduous tree and shrub with a cage or tree tube, in order to prevent predation by hares. This will amount to 1000 trees and shrubs caged in 2026! Thank you also to North Rustico Home Hardware for your generous donation of 1000 wooden stakes!

TREC has been banding and monitoring tree swallows in an effort to track this declining species population, while providing safe nesting habitat via nesting boxes.

We are currently working with professional banders to train our staff to band young and adult tree swallows. With ten watershed groups involved across the Island this project has seen many recaptures (birds banded in previous years who have made the migration back), including a hatch year bird.

What is a hatch year bird? A hatch-year (HY) bird is a term used by ornithologists and bird banders to identify a bird that is in its very first calendar year of life. Meaning this bird was hatched in a nesting box on PEI, banded, and returned the next year! This is exciting news as the survival rate for hatch year tree swallows can be as low as 20%.
