Congratulations!

Louisa Horne Nominated as Director 2028-30!

The Zone 28 Nominating Committee met last week and their selection to serve as our Director from July 2028 to June 2030 is Louisa Horne, from Halifax, NS, District 7815. If there are no challenges, her position will be confirmed this coming December 1. Please join in welcoming Louisa to her new role!

Louisa Horne served as Governor of District 7820 in 2019-20, and she currently serves as Membership Coordinator for Zone 28 (2024-2028).

Bio:
Louisa is an entrepreneur, business leader and doctoral scholar who is passionate about building partnerships and “connecting dots”; she will complete her PhD research on civic engagement and volunteering next year. A former geologist, teacher, and national director of Canada’s largest small business advisory consultancy, Louisa has been an independent management consultant, specializing in leadership development. She is a Strategic Doing Practitioner through Purdue University and studied Innovative Business Design at the University of Toronto. She is also certified as a corporate director (Rotman School of Business) and business coach. Her work focuses on change management and facilitating innovative initiatives.

A member of the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbour since 2005, Louisa was inspired to join when her younger daughter was selected to be a Youth Exchange student. A multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Louisa led the district’s last Group Study Exchange team to Malaysia and also lead a Rotary Friendship Exchange to New Zealand. She currently serves as Council on Legislation rep for the district.

Louisa is known for creative approaches to leadership, and she is always looking for opportunities to increase impact – and irresistibility – of Rotary. She has been an RI President’s rep multiple times and has facilitated workshops at three International Conferences, spoken in several RI webinars, and been keynote speaker at numerous President Elect training sessions and other training events, as well as at District Conferences across North America.

The Rotary Club of St. John’s, with the support of the City of St. John's, officially unveiled the city’s very first Peace Pole at Bannerman Park today.

This monument stands as a permanent symbol of our shared commitment to community harmony and global unity. It features the universal message "May Peace Prevail on Earth" inscribed in multiple languages: English, French, Innu-aimun, Inuttitut, and Mi'kmaw.

Rotary President Charlene Brophy, Past President Derek Winsor, and Mayor Danny Breen officially unveiled the pole at a special dedication ceremony.

Next time you visit Bannerman Park, we invite you to stop by the new monument and reflect on its message. Peace begins right here in our own community.

TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE!

Peace in the world begins with peace within each of us; the peace we find within can help bring peace to the world around us. This month your peace committee would like to share a reflection called Being Boat People by Jon Huckins...

"Our house is chaos. We have four young children, and on any given day they each have a friend (or three!) over at the house, eating all our food and leaving crumb trails through the living room. It’s sacred chaos, but it’s still chaos.

One day a few years ago, the “sacred” part of the chaos left the building, and it was just the kind of chaos that led to yelling, arguing, and elevated heartrates. Rosie, our second born, stood in the midst of the chaos and sternly instructed, “Let’s all just pause, take a few deep breaths, and have a family reset.
Instantly, we all felt relieved that someone had the clarity and conviction to call us back to ourselves. To name the chaos but not be swept away in it..."

Congratulations to Rotarian Glenn Bolger on his appointment to the board of the World Council of Credit Unions. Always good to celebrate our members’ successes.

Congratulations to our CEO, Glenn Bolger, who was appointed to the board of directors for the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). Glenn said it was an honour and a privilege to be named, adding, "This is a full circle moment for me as I was a World Young Credit Union Professionals, or WYCUP, winner in 2004, travelling to the Bahamas and presenting at the Rome conference as the sole winner from North America." The appointment became official this July at the WOCCU Conference and AGM in Sydney, Australia.

Today, our Club gathered for our annual Changeover Luncheon. It’s a tradition that gives us a moment to look back with gratitude and look forward with excitement.

As this Rotary year comes to a close, we extend a heartfelt thank you to outgoing President, Derek Winsor. Derek wrapped up his term exactly as he began it: with energy, pride, and a genuine commitment to bringing us together. His leadership strengthened our club and the work we do for our community.

We were also pleased to welcome incoming President Charlene Brophy, who received her official president’s pin as Derek passed along the Rotary bell and gavel. It was a meaningful moment and a reminder of the continuity, service, and shared purpose that define Rotary.

Derek also took time to recognize two Rotarians who consistently offer guidance, mentorship, and steady support: Bruce Templeton and Jim Carroll. Their dedication to Rotary is remarkable, and their willingness to help whenever needed is appreciated more than words can say.

A special Certificate of Appreciation was presented to the Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary in recognition of the time and effort they dedicated to supporting our luncheons throughout the year. We are thankful for their partnership and for the commitment they showed in helping make our gatherings possible.

As we look to a new Rotary year, we do so with appreciation for the leaders who have guided us, pride in what we’ve accomplished together, and appreciation for the opportunities ahead.

Here’s to another year of service above self, fellowship, and making a meaningful difference in our community.
