On this day, 5 April 1932 in Newfoundland, a crowd of 10,000 people demonstrated outside the central government building in protest at price increases and pension cuts.
Police attacked the demonstrators, clubbing a child in the head, and got more than they bargained for. One officer was pulled from his horse and beaten, while the mob smashed up the building, setting fire to it and storming it in search of Prime Minister Richard Squires. A group of police and priests attempted to get the PM to safety, but he was cornered a couple of times, once punched in the face, before he managed to escape.
Then the demonstrators set about looting all the downtown liquor stores, and the government subsequently collapsed.

After spending lots of time removing ignorant comments on my post and banning those people, below is what I have to say about the most common comments I have to remove...

The bombing of a girls’ primary school in Minab, Hormozgan province, Iran, by forces aligned with the US-Israeli military attack killed 148 female students and injured dozens more. This deliberate attack on a civilian educational facility is utterly unacceptable and a grave violation of international law.

Schools and students are protected under international humanitarian law. Any deliberate or indiscriminate attack on such protected civilian objects may constitute a war crime. The international community must urgently hold the perpetrators accountable and take immediate action to protect children and schools in conflict zones.

Today is Self‑Harm Awareness Day. It’s a reminder that people don’t struggle on their own, they struggle in the climate around them. If someone is surrounded by negativity, stigma, or harsh public discourse, it becomes harder to cope and harder to reach out. We are seeing these harms on a daily basis on social media.

We all know that here in Newfoundland and Labrador, getting mental‑health support isn’t easy. Long waits, limited services, and gaps in care mean many people who ask for help still don’t get it when they need it.

We want safer, more respectful spaces and better access to care. When people feel respected and safe, they’re more likely to talk about what they’re going through.

If you’re hurting, you deserve support. Talking to someone you trust can be a first step, and professional care is the safest option when things feel too heavy to manage alone. We’re tagging and linking community supports below so people know where they can turn. If we've missed any, drop them in the comments.
