🔷Trauma-Informed Practice - For Lawyers - *CLE Opportunity
Friday, May 15, 2026
9:00am - 12:30pm

✨The Journey Project Legal Support Service (JPLSS) is a collaboration between the Journey Project team and trained lawyers who are interested in supporting survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence in Newfoundland and Labrador.

🌿The JPLSS offers survivors 4 hours of free-to-them legal advice from trained, private practice lawyers. Lawyers are compensated for their time spent directly consulting with clients referred by the Legal Support Navigators.

📑Lawyers who wish to participate in this program must participate in a free half-day training session on supporting survivors through a trauma-informed lens. A virtual training is being offered on Friday, May 15 from 9:00am – 12:30pm. This training offers a unique opportunity to build the skills and knowledge of legal professionals and make practicing lawyers eligible to join the Journey Project Legal Support Service.

📍Training will cover:
- identifying and understanding trauma and its impacts
- the neurobiology of trauma
- rationale and principles of trauma-informed lawyering
- trauma-informed responses to disclosures
- burnout, empathic strain, and vicarious trauma

🆓This seminar is free and, *subject to the provisions of the Law Society's Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Requirements, may constitute 3.5 hours of eligible CLE activities.

We want to send a big thank you to our two Bachelor of Social Work students who have just completed their final placements with the Journey Project!

Hailing from Burgeo on the southwest coast of Newfoundland, Jordan (she/her) completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology before pursuing social work. She completed her first social work practicum at The Gathering Place and has a strong interest in theory and its connection to practice. During her time at the Journey Project, Jordan was grateful for the opportunity to learn more about legal systems through hearing directly from clients, and how to better support survivors of intimate partner violence and gender-based violence. Her final presentation focused on decoloniality in social work practice and practicing allyship with Indigenous survivors. In her free time, Jordan enjoys watching pop culture commentary videos, playing video games, and reading on her Kobo.

Coming to our St. John’s office all the way from Mount Pearl, Lauryn (she/her) completed her first BSW placement at Stella’s Circle and continued working at The Gathering Place as a guest support worker during her time with us. These experiences have fostered a strong passion and commitment to community-based social work practice. While at the Journey Project, Lauryn built meaningful connections with survivors, working from a trauma-informed lens and advocating for access to justice. Her final project focused on expanding training for teaching and childcare professionals on providing supportive responses to disclosures of sexual violence from children. In her downtime, you can find her playing with her dogs, listening to Fleetwood Mac, or tending to her ever-growing plant collection.

We are so grateful for the care, thoughtfulness, and dedication Lauryn and Jordan brought to their placements. We wish them all the best in their next chapters!

🎉We are deeply relieved to share that one-time funding will allow the Journey Project to continue providing services without interruption until at least March 2027. This means survivors will continue to have uninterrupted access to trauma-informed legal navigation, plain-language legal information, and free legal advice while navigating complex legal systems.

🔷We also want to acknowledge the uncertainty of the past months and how not knowing if our services would continue may have caused anxiety or a sense of instability. We felt it too. Survivors of sexual violence and intimate partner violence deserve consistent, reliable legal support they can trust. This news provides essential short-term stability and allows us to keep showing up in the ways you have told us matter most.

🔶At the same time, we want to be transparent. Long-term, sustainable investment is still needed. Since launching in 2018, our legal support service has supported more than 1,675 survivors while working alongside communities to increase access to justice in every corner of Newfoundland & Labrador. We will continue to advocate for stable, long-term funding so this program can not only continue, but grow to meet the needs of survivors across the province.

✨We also want to thank every person and community partner who wrote letters of support and shared their voices. Your advocacy and care made a difference.
Above all, we thank the survivors who teach us how to hold on to hope on the hardest of days. You have taught us how to do this work. Thank you for trusting us. We are so grateful to still be here for you.

✨We’re excited to share a new resource for survivors navigating family court after intimate partner violence.

🔷This guide brings together plain language legal information about safety planning, family law, court processes, and related legal issues in Newfoundland and Labrador. If you’re not sure whether it’s the right fit for you, a short summary is available on our website outlining what each section covers, with links to a downloadable copy if you want to go deeper.

🔶Whether you’re just starting to look for information or supporting someone else, this resource is here to help make a complex system a little more understandable.

👋We’ve been quieter than usual here over the past couple of months. Much of our time and energy has been focused where it’s most needed - supporting active clients and advocating with funders for the continuation of our services.

🌟While we don’t yet have any substantive updates about what things will look like in the spring, the survivors we work with every day remind us that the only way forward is one step at a time.

🌿As the year winds down, we want to share a few important resources and reminders:
