Spent the last three works working at the with a diverse and incredibly talented group of artists. Amidst many nice moments, I have to admit that my 90s inner/outer sci-fi nerd self loved getting to work with John de Lancie (“Q” from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Breaking Bad, etc). John was immensely generous with his time and insights, and his curiosity as an elder statesman is unwavering. Inspiring. - Ian

Surprise! NÄRA Community’s debut compilation, Wintering, is available today on SoundCloud (streaming) and Bandcamp (purchase). Despite his recent bizarre ban from Meta (have you heard?), our founder Ian Foster has been travelling freely in what we like to call the real world. Last night, he launched an exhibit in Prince George, BC at - an audio visual experience featuring unreleased video and three new compositions. Thanks to .arts.council for the support. “From Far and Wide: The Soundscapes runs from Feb 5 - April 5, 2026.

It's been one month since NÄRA officially launched to the public at a special listening party and album release of Ian Foster's 'Travelogue'. If you missed this intimate event and are wondering what auditory delights you might expect from this community, here's an idea: Perspective Magazine described 'Winged Words', one of the tracks on the album, as blending "progressive house vibes with timeless storytelling".

With our launch event just days behind us, we were already in the community this week!

We had fun at MusicNL's annual conference this year, and were pleased to offer an immersive experience at their trade show and on the red carpet called "chill out with Nära" - a place to collect your thoughts, page through some art books and listen to a curated playlist of excellent music.

We hope to do this again soon, so look for us in unexpected places where someone might need a break from it all!

Congratulations to NÄRA founder, Ian Foster, on winning the MusicNL 2025 Sound on Screen of the Year Award! This is a new award, presented for the first time at the 2025 Music NL Awards. The Sound on Screen award is awarded to songwriters and composers who have demonstrated innovation, commercial success, and artistic merit from original music created for the screen.

Ian Foster is a multidisciplinary artist and composer from St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador. A MusicNL and ECMA Award Winner, he has toured all over North America and Europe. He is also an award-winning composer for film and television. He was recently commissioned by CBC Radio to develop music for the 2025 Canada Games, and will present a unique sonic exhibition at multiple Canadian galleries in 2026. He remains committed to a lifelong journey in sound.
