June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to recognize and celebrate the vibrant Indigenous cultures and Indigenous people in our communities. This year, we’ve chosen to center the medicine wheel, a wholistic teaching used by many Indigenous nations, including the Mi’kmaq people, that reminds us that health encompasses the mental, spiritual, environmental, and physical. As historical and ongoing colonization continues to damage the health of Indigenous people and communities, we would like to highlight some initiatives from Indigenous organizations that take a wholistic approach to the health of their communities.

First Light recently announced their upcoming Urban Indigenous Health Clinic created in partnership with the provincial government. We look forward to the availability of an Indigenous-led, culturally safe primary care option for urban Indigenous people in St. John’s.

LFC Shield Project serves youth aged 14-18 and is rooted in a holistic Indigenous healing lens. The program encourages positive sexual health, personal wellness and healthy relationships through Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT) empowerment opportunities and life experiences.

Community-Based Research Centre - CBRC’s Two-Spirit Program is a Two-Spirit-led program dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of Canada’s Two-Spirit and Indigenous q***r and trans communities. The program facilitates a number of projects including the Knowledge 2eekerS program dedicated to building research capacity two-spirit and Indigenous q***r and trans people, and the Medicine Bundle project providing free Indigenous medicines alongside sexual health resources like HIV self-test kits and condoms.

If public health talks about HIV without naming racism, it protects racism.

If public health talks about access without naming colonialism, it protects colonialism.

If public health talks about “risk” without naming poverty, housing, policing, child welfare, and social assistance, it blames the people harmed by policy.

HIV prevention must be political because HIV vulnerability is political.
