From Kitchen to Community: Food, Memory and Belonging

We brought together newcomers and residents in St. John's for a special event celebrating cultural diversity through food and storytelling at St. David's Presbyterian Church.
Participants prepared traditional recipes from newcomer cultures alongside a local Newfoundland recipe, sharing personal memories and stories connected to food, family, and home.

This collaborative cooking and storytelling experience created a welcoming space for dialogue, relationship-building, and mutual learning. Thank you to everyone who joined us in fostering intercultural understanding, inclusion, and a sense of belonging in our community!

"Build Your Bridge – Expressing Identity Through Art"

Some stories are too deep for words.

When language became a wall, these women found a door: a camera they had never held before,

a brush that was new in their hands, clay that remembered what words forgot. Come and see what they created.

We are delighted to invite you to attend the "Build Your Bridge" exhibition on July 28, 29, 30, 31 & August 3 from 9 am to 4 pm, and the opening reception on July 30 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at St. John’s City Hall.

"Build Your Bridge – Expressing Identity Through Art" began as a community-based arts initiative to support newcomer women in St. John's in expressing their identities, stories, and settlement journeys through various art forms.

The participants come from four community centres across St. John's: Buckmasters Circle, Rabbittown, Virginia Park, and Froude Avenue. For six months, they explored their immigration journeys through artistic lenses: Photography, Painting, Pottery, and Embroidery. Art gave them a powerful way to express themselves, their feelings, and their thoughts… beyond the boundaries of language.
