Poverty Cove Theatre Company

08/31/2026

Poverty Cove Theatre Company would like to express immense gratitude to the cast, crew and creative team of Building Houses as well as the audience members who attended our premiere production! We know some people traveled great distances, braving moose and rural roads, to be with us and we salute you!

We would also like to extend a sincere thanks to the consultation committee and community members who assisted greatly in the development of our show; Ivan White, Drew Brown, Julia Laite, Gillian Kolla, Jennie Williams, Chrissy Dicks, Calvin White, Evan Butler, Kristen Pittman, Jordan Lawrence and Marquita Walsh as well as our BOD members Maggie Burton, Melanie Ozon and Philippa Jones.

Lastly, we would also like to thank our partner company Theatre Newfoundland Labrador - TNL and the community of Cow Head without whom we could not have made Building Houses in its home region of the Great Northern Peninsula.

Until next time.

Building Houses is closed. For now.

👏Meet the artists!

With all the anticipation surrounding the OPENING of BUILDING HOUSES on August 22nd, we thought this would be a perfect time to share with you the artists who will bring this production to the stage.
--------------------------
Mid summer 1828. Newfoundland is a British Colony maintaining undefined treaty rights with the French along the north coast where residents are labelled squatters by the crown.

Shanawdithit has been taken from her home and is being kept at a plantation house in St. John’s by a European explorer staking his reputation on her cooperation.

In the Straits, young Suzanna Williams is sent to live with her grandmother Hosanna while an Indigenous guide named Jack is tasked with searching for Beothuk on the Great Northern Peninsula.
