FEATURED VETERANS OF THE WEEK: Riverhead

Austin Breen (Photo 1) was born on May 25th, 1888. Born to Matthew and Bridget Breen, Austin grew up in Riverhead and remained living there. Then. Austin joined the Merchant Navy and served in Germany. Austin earned 8 different medals and honours dedicated to his brave time at war. Austin passed away at the age of 85 on June 1st, 1973. He is now buried at the St. Joseph The Worker Cemetery. Austin was a nobel and appreciated man.

James Corcoran (Photo 2) was born on July 7th, 1895. Born to Thomas and Rose Ellen Corcoran he grew up in Riverhead. He later went on to join the Royal Canadian Regiment and became a Private rank. James honorably received 4 medals for his time serving at war. He passed away on April 9th, 1959 at the age of 64. James is now buried at St. Joseph The Worker Cemetery. James was an notable and appreciated man.

FEATURED VETERANS OF THE WEEK: St. Vincent’s

Michael J. Gibbons (Photo 1) was born on November 3rd, 1919. He was born to John and Elizabeth Gibbons in St. Vincent’s. Michael went on to join the Royal Canadian Navy. For his time in the military, Michael earned four medals for his bravery. On April 9th, 1986, Michael sadly passed away at the age of 67. He is now buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Francis Fleming (Photo 2) was born in 1892 to John and Caroline Fleming. As World War 1 began, Francis joined the Quebec Regiment (5th. Mounted Rifles) to serve our country. He was ranked a Private and his badge number was #415878. Sadly, at the age of 24, Francis died fighting at war on June 2nd, 1916. He recieved many honours such as his name is carved in stone at Menin Gate, War Memorial at Ypres-Belgium.

Leslie Martin (Photo 3) was born on April 27th, 1921. Born to Daniel and Helena Martin, Leslie grew up in St. Vincent’s and remained living there. Then, Leslie joined the Merchant Marine in World War 2. He later got married to Mrs. Bride Martin. Leslie passed away at the age of 70 on January 29th, 1992. He is now buried at the Sarced Heart Cemetery.
