Background:
Despite a formal meeting with government and ongoing efforts to advocate for this measure, there has been NO AMENDMENT TO PROVINCIAL ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION TO PROTECT NL FROM WASTE IMPORTATION.
Therefore, any new waste facility anywhere in the province still runs the considerable risk of being used to process imported waste.

Please ACT NOW to support SOS!

03/18/2023

On February 27, 2023, to observe the one-year anniversary of government's rejection of the Lewisporte waste import project, SNAGG's sentinel committee met with the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Bernard Davis, and his officials to discuss measures to protect our province from future exploitation by the waste trade industry.
The meeting was inconclusive but informative. Government has not identified an appropriate legally binding mechanism but is willing to continue working towards this objective and to meet with us for further discussion and briefing.
We will be following up on this invitation and will update as things progress.
Many thanks to Minister Davis and ECC staff for their courtesy towards our members and their encouragement to the public to remain involved in the process.

Greetings all and best wishes for a fine summer season!
To update: our working group is pursuing amendment to legislation that will protect us from exploitation by the international waste trade industry. Government advises that the bureaucrats are currently developing wording for such amendment. We think we should be involved in this process but have so far been kept at arm's length. Your thoughts?
