Today, the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador granted an injunction order against the Fish Food and Allied Workers Union-Unifor (FFAW) to ensure that harvesters are free to fish their snow crab quota, should they wish to do so, and land their catch to processors in the province without being targeted with threats of violence. In particular, the Court has ordered that the FFAW shall cease and desist from any further declaration or authorization of the ongoing tie-up.

A low supply of Gulf crab (coupled with tariff fears) resulted in the 2025 price gap – not collusion or coordinated pricing. Read more about crab pricing in the government-commissioned, independent Sackton Report. https://seafoodproducers.org/sacktonreport/

Today, ASP is responding to the FFAW’s call for the removal of Standing Fish Price Setting Panel Chair, Sheilagh Murphy, KC.

Independent adjudication is a cornerstone of the price-setting process established by government. Disagreement with an outcome is not grounds to discredit or remove a neutral decision-maker.

We remain committed to respecting the integrity of this process and believe it is important that it be upheld without political interference.

Processing plants are often the economic heart of a community.

They bring in wages that get spent locally, at grocery stores, gas stations, and small businesses. They help keep families in town, support local infrastructure, and ensure rural communities remain vibrant places to live.

When plants thrive, entire towns thrive.

Seafood processing generates billions of dollars in Newfoundland and Labrador — but it’s about so much more than numbers.

This industry is woven into the fabric of our culture, providing livelihoods for more than 6,000 workers and supporting families in 70+ towns and communities across the province. Add in the hundreds of small businesses that rely on the ripple effects, and it’s clear: seafood processing helps keep our communities strong and connected.

This is about people, pride, and place.

Sustainability is the foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s seafood industry.

Every step, from the waters where our seafood is harvested to the communities it supports, is guided by careful planning, science, and responsibility.

By working closely with harvesters, scientists, and regulators, ASP members ensure that our fisheries remain healthy, productive, and resilient for generations to come.

These practices not only protect marine ecosystems but also strengthen local economies, sustain jobs, and allow consumers around the world to enjoy seafood they can trust.

Is your next seafood meal a sustainable one?
