Thanksgiving Vigil

Members of St. John's Animal Save gathered today outside of Country Ribbon to bear witness to the chickens on their way to slaughter.

For this one holiday, 2.1 million turkeys are killed in Canada. Add chickens, and the number is unimaginably higher. We celebrate gratitude while taking everything from them.. Gratitude should include compassion for all beings.

We bear witness to show them kindness and to remind others that tradition is no excuse for killing. We look them in the eyes and do our best to offer comfort in their final moments. We document their faces. Each one is an individual who matters.

When you hear “cage-free”, “free-range” or “organic”, what do you picture?⁠
Perhaps hens roaming freely outdoors, with space to move, dust-bathe and live as they naturally would.⁠

But these labels don’t tell the whole story.⁠
⁠
“Cage-free” does not mean cruelty-free. “Free-range” does not mean freedom. And “organic” does not mean that animals are free from exploitation.⁠
⁠
Millions of hens are still bred to produce eggs, confined in intensive systems and ultimately killed when their productivity declines.⁠
We need to look beyond the labels and beyond welfare reforms.⁠
⁠
Animals need more than slightly different conditions of exploitation. They need a future beyond animal agriculture.⁠

St. John's Animal Save held a vigil today outside of Country Ribbon. We had 9 members show their support and take a stand against the killing of thousands of innocent individuals.

Did you know: chickens can recognize up to 100 different faces. They have memories, relationships, and a will to live. Our presence is a promise to bear witness, to offer compassion, and to tell their story.

St. John's Animal Save held a vigil outside of the Country Ribbon slaughterhouse.

Behind those doors, thousands of chickens die weekly. Thousands of individuals who want to live, to scratch in the dirt, to be with their flock. They are social. They are complex. They are not ours to use.

We bear witness because silence is complicity.
Thank you to our dedicated team for taking a stand against this violence.

This morning was 5 degrees and drizzling.

These baby birds, just 6 weeks old, rode across the highway in trucks, fully exposed to the cold and rain. They were shivering.

This was their first day outside. It will also be their last.

Their bodies were covered in f***s and open sores. But their eyes were still curious. Still hopeful.

Just like us, they crave warmth, comfort, and love.
Just like us, they dream.
Just like us, they want to live.

Every year, 75 billion chickens are raised for meat. In addition, 6 billion male chicks are killed immediately after hatching at egg-laying facilities. Because they cannot lay eggs and grow too slowly to be profitable for meat compared to the rapid 42-day cycle of broiler chickens, they are discarded 💔

These numbers are too vast for the human brain to fully comprehend, often, instead of being moved, people become apathetic when confronted with them. Yet, chickens are intelligent, social, and sensitive individuals who love life, their families, and their companions.
This industry is a monster, causing a depth of suffering that words cannot capture. On the inside, they are no different from the dogs and cats we love, they are simply wearing a different suit.

Choose compassion: their lives, not ours.

Seventy-five billion beautiful, feathered souls are lost every year. They are living, intelligent, and sensitive beings who come into this world just like us, experiencing life for the very first time, wishing only for a chance to exist in peace.

Choose kindness.

Choose the mercy you would want if you were at the mercy of others.

They cannot free themselves, but we can.

Today was windier than expected, but we showed up anyway 🐔💔

The reactions were mixed. Some people slowed down, nodded, and honked. Others looked away, yelled, or flipped us off. That’s what showing up looks like sometimes. It’s uncomfortable, it’s messy, and it matters.

Why were we there?
Because the chickens inside are individuals, not inventory. They feel fear, pain, and stress just like the pets we love at home. The reality for most of them is confinement, mutilation without pain relief, and a terrifying end. These aren’t accidents or rare cases, this is standard practice in the animal agriculture industry.

Showing up matters because silence allows it to continue. Every person who bears witness, asks questions, and refuses to look away shifts the culture a little. When we take a stand, we say: these lives count. These injustices won’t be invisible.

If you’ve been wondering whether one person showing up makes a difference - it does. It matters to the people who see us, and it matters to the animals who finally have someone on the outside remembering they exist.
