Our SABRI Innovation Manager Terri Byrne was a panelist at the EcoNext conference on Community-Led Solutions.

We’re kicking off the afternoon with Community-Led Solutions: Building Sustainable Futures Together.

Moderated by Joshua Barrett, Senior Consultant at Stantec and Chair of econext, this panel features:

- Jamie Hewlett, Regional Energy Manager, Nunatsiavut Government
- Keith Drover, Project Director with Nunavut Nukkiksautiit Corporation
- Michelle Roche, Associate and Environmental Professional (EP) with Dillon Consulting Limited
- Terri Byrne, Manager, Innovation, St. Anthony Basin Resources Inc. (SABRI)

Michelle Roche highlights the importance of integrating community priorities, traditional knowledge and western science into decarbonization planning, with equitable decision-making from the very beginning.

Keith Drover speaks about pursuing clean energy projects across the Qikiqtani Region — which are 100% Inuit owned.

Terri Byrne highlighted how community needs to shape the organization’s work. With 16 communities in the project region, local priorities in tourism, transportation and energy help guide initiatives that reflect the needs of the people they serve.

Jamie Hewlett states that it is key to make sure everyone is on board to projects, and building trust is the most important piece.

Bus depot is advancing!

Our SABRI Transit bus depot is coming to life!

A big thank you to Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Canada for their funding support under the Rural Transit Solutions Fund, The Northpine Foundation and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for their initial start-up funding. We are more than 2 years and ridership continues to grow!

At the SABRI WORKS Future Me Lab at the White Hills Academy Career Fair, students explored career interests, shared their plans after graduation, and told us what matters when choosing where to live and work. Approximately 300 students from seven schools attended the career fair, with over 60% visiting the Future Me Lab. Skilled trades, arts and creative careers, and health care were among the leading career interests, while engineering stood out in our “Opportunities of Tomorrow” activity. Students considered futures both close to home and further afield, with Corner Brook, St. Anthony, and the St. John’s–CBS area receiving the most selections on our location map.

Family connections, better wages, affordable housing, and good jobs in their chosen field were key factors influencing students’ decisions to stay, leave, or return. They also highlighted the importance of recreation, nearby education and training, mental health supports, and reliable internet and cell service. These conversations reinforced that building a future here is about more than finding a job—it’s also about having the connections, opportunities, and supports to build a life. Thank you to everyone who participated! Your feedback will help inform SABRI WORKS’ youth engagement and workforce development efforts.

SABRI Innovation staff member Katie represented SABRI at yesterday’s White Hills Academy Career Fair!

Katie connected with students and shared information about SABRI’s work across the region, including transit, housing, hydroponic farming, innovation, workforce development, and other research initiatives.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the SABRI table to learn more about the projects and opportunities happening in our region!

Yesterday, SABRI WORKS was excited to launch our Future Me Lab: Build Your Future Here initiative at the White Hills Academy Career Fair.

The Future Me Lab gave students an opportunity to explore career interests, learn more about local opportunities, and share their thoughts on what would encourage young people to stay in or return to the SABRI region after graduation.

Students participated in interactive activities focused on career pathways, local industries, future work opportunities, and what they feel the region needs to support youth. Their input will help inform workforce planning, youth retention strategies, employer engagement, training priorities, and future career development programming through SABRI WORKS.

A big thank you to White Hills Academy, the career fair organizers, participating students, employers, and everyone who helped make the activity a success.

We were encouraged by the conversations, ideas, and energy shared by students, and we look forward to continuing this important work across the SABRI region.
