‼️Concern #2‼️
All Landfill sites have a Tire Recycling Program it is at the entry of every site. After 30 Hours of fighting the St. Barbe Landfill Fire we felt we had it extinguished enough to give our first responders a break. Unfortunately, it ignited it again and caught several tires that have been tossed in the landfill with residential garbage. FYI this very hot, raging black smoke fire was 24 inches from the tree line. Please do better.

‼️CONCERN #1‼️
Day 1 of after reopening the Sub 3 Landfill we find this at the top of the pile. These propane tanks exploded all around our first responders while they tried to extinguish the fire, making it very dangerous to do their job while already in a very dangerous situation. We can do better please recycle your combustion tanks through the proper programs that is offered at our landfills.

Update on SubRegion 3 Landfill Fire

July 31, 2026

The Northern Peninsula Regional Service Board (NorPen) is providing an update on the fire at the SubRegion 3 Landfill.

The fire was reported at approximately 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29. Three local Fire Departments responded immediately and worked throughout the night to contain the fire. On Thursday morning, the Fire Department assessed the risk of the fire spreading to the surrounding forest.

To help protect the tree line, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador deployed a water bomber, which completed 20 water and foam suppressions over the site. Despite these efforts, the fire continued to burn beneath the surface.

Following consultation with Western Regional Waste Management and other experts, it was determined that the safest and most effective method of extinguishing the fire is to cover it with large amounts of soil. Heavy equipment began this work Thursday night and will continue until the fire is fully extinguished.

NorPen thanks the responding fire departments-Straits Fire Department, St. Barbe Fire Department, Bird Cove/Pond Cove Fire Department, provincial agencies, MHA Andrea Barbour, Teir 1 Capital, Western Regional Waste Management, T&M Construction, Forestry and Agriculture (Port Saunders) and everyone involved in the response. Right now there is no immediate threat to surrounding communities, and the site continues to be closely monitored.

Further updates will be provided as they become available
