Let us reflect on what, "Truth and Reconciliation," means.........

09/22/2025

Hello / Bonjour / Kwe,

September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day — is a time to remember and reflect on the enduring impacts of residential schools and colonization. It is also an opportunity to recognize the strength and contributions of Indigenous peoples and to commit to actions that move us toward a more just and inclusive future.

Across Mi’kma’ki—the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik peoples—NSSAL instructors and staff play an important role in creating spaces where learners can reflect and reconcile. By fostering understanding and dialogue, we help ensure that this day is not just observed once a year, but an ongoing practice.

This season also invites broader reflection. October marks Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia—a time to celebrate Mi’kmaw culture, language, and heritage. October 4th is further recognized as the National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. We encourage all to hold space for these related observances.

On September 2nd, 2025, Mitch sat down with Becky at Telile for a great chat about RCLN’s literacy programs. They talked about the progress we’ve made over the past two years, what we’re working on now, and what’s coming next. It’s a great look at how we’re helping with literacy and learning. Check it out!
