We understand that there can be a lot of enrichment available to outdoor cats. However, in Squamish, there’s many instances of cats being succumbed to predation from wildlife like coyote and raccoons, as well as vehicle collisions, disease, and poisons.

Squamish’s Cat Search and Rescue’s annual report noted that of the cats that went missing, 0 returned cats were outdoor cats, and 100% of the cats found deceased were outdoor cats.

Not to mention the impact that outdoor cats have on bird populations, with up to 100 million birds killed every year by cats.

That’s why we’ve pulled together some tips from BC SPCA and Stewardship Centre for BC on providing enrichment for your cat while keeping them indoors.

In April, we worked together with the grade 7-9 students at Ècole les Aiglons to make their school windows more bird-friendly. The students had previously collected data on which windows they experienced the most bird strikes, and after a quick lesson on the threats that birds face in towns such as Squamish and what we can do to help, we headed outside to retrofit the high-risk windows with Friendly Bird Collision Deterrent Markers.

Thanks so much to the students and teachers at Ècole les Aiglons for having us, we had a great time!

Join us for a talk by Nature Squamish Birders Coordinators Niall Bell and Griffin Duckworth as they discuss how to use the birding app eBird and its importance in bird conservation.

This talk fits perfectly in this year's World Migratory Bird Day theme: Every Bird Counts: Your Observations Matter. This theme highlights the role of community participation in data collection, from backyard bird counts to large-scale habitat surveys. All this information helps to create effective conservation plans for birds and encourages everyone to take care of nature, too.

Every year, a selection of birds are chosen as focal species for the Environment for the Americas World Migratory Bird Day. Each species represents the importance of community science and local observations in tracking, protecting, and conserving birds worldwide.

Additionally, each year an artist is chosen to represent the focal species using their preferred medium. This year, the artist is Luísa Lacerda, who uses embroidery to bring the focal species to life - aren't they beautiful?

We have shared the focal species that you can (easily, or not so easily!) find in Squamish. Next time you're out on a walk, see if you can spot any and record your sightings on the eBird app!
