PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE – GAS LEAK

Squamish Fire Rescue is responding to an active gas leak at Pemberton Ave & Fourth Ave in downtown Squamish.

Please avoid the area. A one-block safety perimeter is in place.

If you’re nearby:
• Close all windows and doors
• Avoid all ignition sources
• Do not smoke
• Do not start or run vehicles

The nearby construction site has been evacuated. No injuries have been reported.

FortisBC crews are on site working to resolve the situation.

As we get ready for The Big Weekend, I’ve been reflecting on how the Squamish Mural Walk Festival has grown from an ambitious idea into a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community.

The murals may be what people see, but behind every wall is an incredible team of artists, businesses, property owners, volunteers, sponsors, community partners, and so many others who make it all possible.

I also share a few behind-the-scenes stories, including what it’s been like working with our Creative Director, Alex Fowkes, over the past six years!

A huge thank you to the local businesses who help keep our mural artists fueled throughout the Squamish Mural Walk Festival!

Creating large-scale murals takes long days, creativity, and a lot of energy, and thanks to the generosity of many downtown businesses, our artists are able to enjoy delicious meals while bringing new public art to Downtown Squamish.

The Squamish Mural Walk Festival wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support of our sponsors, partners, and community.

From funding and materials to equipment, accommodations, volunteer support, and so much more, this festival is truly a community effort. So much so that I can’t tag everyone in this post! So watch out for the next post where we thank all the downtown businesses who help feed our Artists!

Every mural created this weekend is a reflection of the businesses and organizations that believe in making Downtown Squamish more vibrant, creative, and welcoming.

Join us on Saturday, July 25 for Open Street Day, part of The Big Weekend in Downtown Squamish!

From 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Cleveland Avenue from Winnipeg Street to Main Street will transform into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly space filled with local businesses, community vendors, live entertainment, public art, delicious food, and family-friendly activities.

As part of The Big Weekend, you’ll also experience the Squamish Mural Walk Festival, with artists creating new murals live throughout downtown and Stan Clarke Park, and the Squamish Arts Festival in Junction Park, making downtown the place to be all day long.

Road Closure:
To create a safe, people-first space, Cleveland Avenue from Winnipeg Street to Main Street will be closed to vehicles from 7:00 AM-6:00 PM. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes if you’re travelling through downtown.

Leave the Car Behind:
The best way to experience Open Street Day is by walking, biking, rolling, or taking transit. If you do need to drive, additional event parking is available at the Squamish Adventure Centre, just a short walk from downtown.

Accessibility:
We want everyone to enjoy The Big Weekend.

Accessible parking will be available on Winnipeg Street and Second Avenue beside Municipal Hall.

An accessible passenger drop-off and pick-up area will be available at the East entrance of Stan Clarke Park.

Accessible routes throughout the event will help make downtown easy to navigate.

Come spend the day exploring Downtown Squamish, supporting local businesses, discovering local artists and makers, enjoying live entertainment, and connecting with the community.

One of the things we love most about Squamish Together is the opportunity to celebrate the many cultures, traditions, and stories that make our community so vibrant.

We’re honoured to welcome the Squamish Nation Group, Menásta ti Snew̓íyelh Texwta7 ti Smén̓hem (“The Beating Drum of the Unborn History”), as well as a demonstration of Gatka, the traditional Sikh martial art and sword-fighting practice.

These performances will bring energy, tradition, and community spirit to Downtown Squamish, reminding us what “Together” is all about.
