Hilltop House Support Society supports the residents of the long-term care home in Squamish, BC

Many thanks to Karan from the Squamish Quilters Guild for another donation of a fidget apron for the residents. Over time, the Guild has donated a number of these aprons, using ingenious items that occupy a number of the residents for hours. Thanks again for your generosity.

Yesterday was a beautiful fall day for taking the residents up the Sea to Sky Gondola. The sun was out, there was no wind and no one was in any hurry to leave the viewing platform and take the gondola back down to the bus. Thanks as always to the Gondola management for sponsoring this visit. The trip would not be possible without your generosity.

Today, the bus took residents downtown to participate in the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation. There was a good turnout there from the Squamish community and two of our residents had an opportunity to speak about their experiences in residential school. It is very important for our resident elders to have the opportunity to take part in these events. Thanks go to the Hilltop staff and the volunteers who helped make this possible.

The Support Society was pleased to sponsor the Oktoberfest Hand Chime Concert organized by the Music Therapist, Maddie, on Saturday at Hilltop House. The event was planned to be on the courtyard but even though the weather took us inside, we had a good many family and friends participate. The hand chime ensemble entertained everyone with appropriate Oktoberfest music, led as always by the wonderful Maddie.
The concert was followed by refreshments, included German b**r (non-alcoholic). Many thanks to Heather from the Tilly Trailer Co. for the donation of pop. We have plenty left over for next time. Hopefully, we can provide more weekend events that enable family and friends to attend. Thanks again Maddie and all the volunteers who came out to help.

Many thanks to everyone from the community who stopped by the Support Society's booth at the Brackendale Fall Fair yesterday. It was great to chat with everyone, sell a few raffle tickets and provide some free give-aways. We also had the opportunity to identify the many activities provided to the Hilltop House residents by the donations received from the Squamish community. Thanks again to everyone who participated and, as always, our local sponsors.

Yesterday, our now shiny, clean bus was parked outside Walmart while the residents were inside shopping. Thanks go to Rick Hunter who offered to clean the bus for us at his shop in the Industrial Park, saving the Support Society members the risk of a broken hip from climbing up ladders with hoses and washcloths. Thanks again for the continuing community support given to the residents of Hilltop House.

The Support Society recently purchased four more drums for the music therapy program. These sit on the floor and are easier for the residents to play. Thanks to Maddie, our wonderful music therapist, for requesting these great additions to the drum circle and for all the music activities she has created which the residents really enjoy.

Yesterday, the volunteers who cook and serve at Friday Night Dinners provided spare ribs, roasted vegetables, home-made buns and English trifle for the residents. Our two student volunteers, Savreet and Sauvin will be heading off to university next month. They have been a great addition to our team and, we and the residents will miss them. Thanks girls and all the best for the future.

Yesterday, the residents went on a excursion new to all of them. We took a trip up the forestry road to Squamish Canyon and enjoyed an hour in the forest on the lounge patio. There were ice-creams all round and plenty to look at. Nicky and the staff were so helpful letting us take the bus in so we didn't have far to push the wheelchairs. We really thank the Canyon for welcoming our group and making this trip possible. It really was a wonderful afternoon.

Another great bus trip to the Oceanfront today with a nice wind to cool down the warm day and ice-creams to enjoy. There was also plenty of action out on the water to watch. A really pleasant way for the residents to spend an afternoon.
