Squamish River Watershed Society A registered, charitable environmental non-profit organization. We are projects based focused on a watershed management in the Sea to Sky corridor.

The roots of the Squamish Watershed Society date back to 1993 when a group of people interested in protecting the integrity of the Squamish River Watershed formed the Squamish River Watershed Committee. In 1995 the Watershed Committee partnered with the Squamish Nation, and regional and provincial governments on Forest Renewal BC's Watershed Restoration Program. From 1995 to 1998, under the Watershed Restoration Program, the Watershed Committee conducted environmental assessments on all of the water courses draining into the Squamish River, identified key restoration sites, and conducted in-stream restoration work. Impressed with the committees level of expertise and quality of work First Nation, and provincial and regional government partners encouraged the committee to form as a registered non-profit society, and in 1998 the Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) became was incorporated under the Society Act of British Columbia. As a registered non-profit in 1999 the SRWS successfully applied to lead Forest Renewal BC’s Watershed Restoration Program and expanded the program to conserve and restore the integrity of various other watercourses in and around the Squamish and Lillooet River watersheds. Incorporation into a registered society marked a shift in SRWS history and the organization assumed the role of lead proponent and administrative body for a variety of funding agencies and projects in the Squamish and Lillooet River watersheds. While the SRWS provides the structure to fund watershed related projects, the society stays committed to their roots to provide opportunity for citizens, policy makers, resources users, First Nations, organizations, and interested parties to exchange technical/science based information on issues concerning the watershed. In 2011 the SRWS became a registered charitable organization

We recently hosted our 4th Munch and Learn event at the Squamish Adventure Centre: Many Generations, One Future: Climate Action in Howe Sound.

We had a full house, maxing out the venue’s theatre capacity, as we heard from local leaders and organizations across the region:

🌲 Ruth Simons opened the evening with an introduction to UNESCO Biosphere Regions and how local action connects to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

🚌 MLA Jeremy Valeriote shared an update on the proposed interregional transit service connecting Sea-to-Sky communities with Metro Vancouver.

🌿 Julia Stafford and Renata Rovelo shared the Squamish Nation’s Climate Action Legacy and progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

🐟 Silvi Cafarella highlighted the Squamish River Watershed Society’s work restoring and monitoring fish habitat in the estuary.

🌽 Marissa Carlberg shared how Squamish CAN is strengthening local food systems through community gardens, farms, school meals, the Harvest Hub, repair-and-reuse initiatives, and more.

🌱 Christina Stevenson and Nina Robertson showcased projects led by the Youth Climate Corps of BC, from energy efficiency and transportation to waste diversion.

⛰️ Karen Elliott shared an overview of actions and results seen at the District of Squamish since the introduction of the Six Big Moves.

The evening wrapped up with round-table conversations, where a few common themes emerged: how do we engage more people, meet growing demands for education, and secure the resources and funding needed to keep this work moving?

A huge thank you to the Squamish Youth Climate Corps for helping coordinate the event, to Cheryl Cameron and all of our wonderful speakers, and to everyone who showed up with their energy, ideas, and questions.

As we’ve learned, there are many opportunities to get involved in protecting this beautiful region we call home. We encourage you to explore these initiatives and look forward to seeing where these connections and ideas take us as we work together toward a more sustainable Howe Sound.

SRWS is hosting two Rivers Day events this weekend, everyone is welcome!

📅Saturday, September 26th 1PM - 3PM
We will be removing invasive species and planting native riparian species with Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council beside Mamquam River.

📅Sunday, September 27th 11AM - 1PM
We will in the estuary beside the Squamish River, planting native riparian vegetation. Meet us at Culvert 2 on Spit Rd., 1.5km south of the Fisherman’s entrance. Come learn about our watershed and native vegetation, and ongoing restoration efforts in the estuary.

Both events are family friendly! All required tools will be provided.

SRWS and Sea To Sky Invasives are looking for volunteers this upcoming Tuesday, September 22nd to help with restoration at Coho Park!

Volunteers will remove invasive plants and replant native vegetation along the trail system.

All are welcome! Tools are provided.

Two weeks ago, SRWS hosted the Youth Climate Corps BC Richmond and Squamish teams for a full morning of sedge planting! 🌱

Together, we planted hundreds of sedge plugs to help restore and expand the natural sedge marsh habitat in the Squamish Estuary. It was a great morning of learning about estuary restoration, contributing to the recovery of this important ecosystem, and racing against the rising tides!

A huge thank you to both YCC teams for bringing so much energy and enthusiasm to the work. 💚
