Bumble bees need three types of habitat to survive: plants on which to forage for pollen and nectar, nesting sites, and places to overwinter.

Did you know : ๐Ÿbumble bee colonies are ANNUAL, with only the new queens living through the winter.

New queens remain with the nest until they have mated and the season is over. At that time, the new queens leave the nest in search of an overwintering site. Once she finds her site, she will dig down a few centimeters, usually in soft earth, form an oval cavity, and settle in until the following spring. The remainder of the colony, including the foundress, dies off at the end of the year.

These queens emerge from hibernation in the early spring and immediately search for a nest site. Nests are often located underground in abandoned rodent nests, or above the ground in tufts of grass, old birdsโ€™ nests, or cavities in dead trees or under rock piles.

Our first meeting of the season featured guest speaker Ron Long who for over 5 decades has been researching & photographing BC flora. He showed us dozens of his amazing photos & described the traits & habitats of the native plants, mostly lady slipper orchids found throughout our province. Astonishing!

Garden centres make a small fortune every spring. Meanwhile, I'm usually out in the cold deliberately snipping bare, dead-looking twigs off my shrubs. There's a quiet trick to multiplying your gardenโ€”figs, hydrangeas, roses, you name itโ€”right now, when everything looks completely lifeless. You don't need a heated greenhouse or any fancy kit. You don't even need that expensive chemical rooting powder. In fact, to get them going, I just dip them in a couple of everyday things you probably have sitting in your kitchen cupboard right now. Snip them, dip them in this pantry mix, stick them in the dirt, and literally walk away for a year. Plants want to grow, mostly you just have to give them the excuse and then get out of their way. Iโ€™ve put together a list of about 40 plants that actually prefer to be treated this way, plus the exact kitchen ingredients that trick them into throwing out new roots. Grab your secateurs and save yourself a few quid next year. I've left the details in the comments.
