Hello from the YCC Courtenay team! This is what we’ve been up to this season.

Gardening🌱
Throughout the summer we’ve been working with both Lush Valley and Lake Trail Community Education Centre to grow and maintain a total of 4 different community gardens. We are also working on designing a rain catchment system for one of them to increase drought resiliency.

Farm Gleans🍓
In collaboration with Lush Valley, we’ve been participating in farm gleans to support local farmers and to promote food security in the Comox Valley.

Restoration🪏
Throughout the season we have worked with organizations such as the BC Parks Foundation, the Comox Valley Regional District and Project Watershed to restore ecosystems at various sites by removing invasive plants and planting native ones.

Environmental Monitoring🐸
The Courtenay team has been engaging in environmental monitoring with BC Parks Foundation by recording observations of vegetation and wildlife, and by helping with trail camera maintenance. We also had the opportunity to participate in a smolt count with the Millard Piercy Watershed Stewards to monitor the local fish populations.

Waste Diversion♻️
So far, we have worked at 3 large events in the Comox Valley to divert waste by sorting and auditing waste, and educating people on proper waste disposal practices.

Hours per week: 35
Compensation: $30.00/hr

Hi from the YCC Vernon team!
These last few weeks, we've been busy assisting the City's FireSmart Coordinator by taking on and completing, so far, 32 Home Ignition Zone assessments of private homes' fire safety. We are taking on multi-units next week!
We've also been removing invasive plants (and more) at the Sisplk food forest, Sncacmatqtn Agricultural Park, and Allen Brooks Nature Centre!
One of the highlights for us was from Vernon's Canada Day Celebration—we had 103 cyclists use the bike valet, and had many awesome conversations with community members!

Youth Climate Corps BC is returning to Kamloops! We're excited to introduce our Kamloops Program Co-Leads, Aravna and Emerson.

Aravna:
Aravna is pursuing a Bachelor of Natural Resource Science at Thompson Rivers University, where her studies have deepened her passion for environmental stewardship, climate resilience, and sustainable community development. Growing up in the Caribbean gave her an early appreciation for the close relationship between communities and the natural environment. She believes that meaningful climate action begins with listening to communities, fostering collaboration, and empowering young people to become leaders and change-makers.

Emerson:
Emerson is a student in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) program at Thompson Rivers University, studying Geography and Environmental Economics. Growing up in the Rocky Mountains of Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, she developed a deep appreciation for the natural environment. Throughout her academic journey, that appreciation has grown into a commitment to environmental stewardship, climate justice, and sustainable community development. Emerson is passionate about systems thinking and believes lasting climate solutions come from working collaboratively to create healthier, more resilient communities.

For the first time ever, Youth Climate Corps BC is launching a program in Richmond! As we begin this new chapter, our Program Co-Leads will play a crucial role in shaping the program's impact in the community.

We're excited to introduce our Richmond Program Co-Leads, William and Raghava.

William (he/him):

William joins YCCBC as a Program Co-Lead, bringing a passion for climate action, community resilience, and helping people build deeper connections with the places they live. Before joining the team, he completed a Master of Architecture and a Master of Landscape Architecture at UBC and worked in the architecture industry on sustainability and low-carbon projects. William is excited to help empower young people to take meaningful climate action while strengthening community resilience in Richmond.

Raghava:

Raghava brings perspectives rooted in intercultural understanding, regenerative agriculture, and systems thinking. He believes that addressing the climate crisis requires humility, determination, and collaboration. While the challenges we face are complex, Raghava is inspired by the transformative solutions that emerge when communities come together to care for one another and the places they call home.

👋Zach here from the YCCBC Squamish team. We’ve had a productive week here! Let’s get you updated:

🐸We monitored ponds with the Squamish River Watershed Society SRWS to check in on the northwestern salamanders and the northern red-legged frog. These ponds are drying up faster and faster these days, and these amphibians need to develop their hind legs before the pools close in on them! Luckily, these ones are growing their legs quickly.

🌱Burdock is an invasive species that out-competes native plant species. We have partnered with Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council to adopt four sites along the Mamquam River and remove the burdock.

♻️GFL Environmental has provided us with the tools and training to commence Recycle Tote Audits, an initiative to encourage residents to recycle responsibly.

🏠A visit to the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) to learn from the experts about air-sealing and retrofitting homes. Next week, we start performing air-sealing assessments with Sitka Home Energy Solutions —a quick, easy and effective way to reduce air leakage and make homes more energy efficient.

🧑‍🌾 Helping out at the produce farm with Squamish Climate Action Network to promote food sovereignty.

Earlier this week, the Co-Leads from our Vernon, Squamish, Courtenay, and Kelowna programs gathered virtually to welcome the newly onboarded Co-Leads for our Richmond and Kamloops programs.

This year, our fifth season of operation, is our biggest year yet! Thank you, Co-Leads, for making our programs possible.
