The first long weekend at TSC had 'sporty' weather on Saturday, good enough for 7 flights before shutting down and going to the clubhouse, where the students got an in-depth session on launch/landing. Sunday was blue to start, we had 32 flights, and the ceiling rose from 3650'ASL up to over 7000'ASL later in the day. Monday was windy again as the high pushed through, a few more check flights for seasoned veterans and everyone went home. Work continues at the field with maintenance and small projects.

May 9 and 10... Saturday's forecast of rain came 2 hours earlier than desired. We got some flights done, but finished up the day with paperwork and introduced the new USS students to Crud. 4 of the USS members slept overnight (brave souls!!) and survived the near-freezing temperatures. On Sunday, the weather forecast was windy as the high-pressure system came through, but the thermals were really cooking! We had 32 flights, and the check flights continued, as well as first and second lessons for the new students. Thanks to Dave Bluhm, Allie Cole, and Roger Harrop for all the tows, and to Bill, Mike, Richard, and Jim who instructed! Kudos to Dave Cole and Paul Payette for taking advantage of the boomer thermals in their own ships and doing some x-c!

The season continues with more maintenance and annual check flights. With our Puchacz back, we test-flew it and went right into spin checks! On Sunday we stopped flying mid-afternoon while the front, and rain, pushed through….merely an excuse to refocus and commence the Crud games!

TSC is BACK IN THE AIR!!!! We've had a very busy winter and spring. Lots of maintenance and planning has occured, we had a mid-winter gathering, we had our AGM, and we purchased and picked up our new-to-us ASK21. Towpilots were checked out and as of yesterday, glider check outs have started. Read on and stay tuned!

TSC's new training glider is coming soon!! The Horsa is a 27m wonder with exceptional visibility, tricycle gear for smoother landings, can carry multiple students and can even carry its own recovery vehicle thus making outlandings easy. Instead of 20 tows for 20 students, one tow will be sufficient to allow all students to receive the same lesson as they merely swap seats mid-flight. The stall speed is a tad higher than the JAR-22 parameters, but at 42kts with full flaps, it should make an easy job of it for landings. With FLARM, there's no reason to paint over the camouflage.

And a reminder that the AGM is this Saturday. Stay tuned!

At the Soaring Association Of Canada’s AGM today, Toronto Soaring Club captured some great honours. Congratulations to Charles Petersen for his many years of support to the sport in Canada, especially through the creation of Youth Flight Canada and Freedom’s Wings. TSC’s pilots collectively earned the Roden Award for highest fleet utilization for the vast number of FAI badges earned in 2025. Nataly Danylyuk was awarded the Silver C Gull award as the youngest pilot to earn the Silver badge (5 hr duration, 1000m height gain, 50km distance). And Emily Peelar is SAC’s first recipient of the Aero Club award for Emerging Leader - Emily is the president of the USS program and a true leader. WELL DONE ALL!

The TSC AGM is April 4 at 10am

TSC president Dave Bluhm has found the most difficult way to inflate the Puchacz's tailwheel while the rest of the gang are hard at work on the other parts of the Puchacz and Junior in Eddy's shop. The snow is melting, birds are chirping, and we're starting to talk more and more about flying. Thanks to everyone for keeping our fleet healthy and well-maintained!

It's mid-February and we're still fully engaged with flying. Our maintenance crew and USS volunteers have been busy with the SZD-50 Puchacz, SZD-51 Junior, and LS-1, getting them looking nicer and doing some well-needed maintenance and vario upgrades.

Many of our instructors are attending the SAC-FIRC course, and new instructor candidates are preparing for their pending course. The new USS hopefuls are in the midst of their studies, and 4 of our instructors are doing Condor simulator training online with the USS hopefuls in preparation for the real thing.

And leaving the best for last, thanks to our farsighted exec a few years ago, we passed a bylaw that permitted online meetings. We hosted our first fully online special membership meeting this past weekend to vote on the purchase of the ASK21 that was for sale at SOSA. After much discussion and good questions from the membership, we are pleased to announce that the vote was unanimous, and we hope to see it at our field when the runways can receive aircraft!

The new TSC ASK21 will be used for training, but will also be used for dual X-C flying as part of our goal to put the "soaring" back into the Toronto Soaring Club. Stay tuned, there's lots going on.

2025 TSC Summary - at our winter dinner, club president Dave Bluhm charged us with the task of putting the SOARING back into the club name... which we did, and then some. It was a banner year. We got new members, said goodbye to old members, sold our beloved ASK13, went on a winter road trip, attended SAC's Safety II session, hosted the Provincial Championships, got 2 new YFC single seaters (Jantar and LS-1), made full use of our new hangar, flew thousands of km cross country, saw many good landouts, fed plenty during our potlucks, enjoyed bonfires, fired up the winch again... the list goes on and on.

WHAT?! November 8th and TSC is still flying? Yessireebob, that's what happened. We had 9 flights while others worked on the ground trying to make the winch run a bit smoother, and did the odd maintenance job in preparation for winter. Kudos to Burt who saw the glider trailers outside last Thursday and said "Well, we should probably put these away in the hangar, nobody is rigging for the next 5 months!". We recommend that each club have a Burt. And a Bill, our CFI, who said, "We're going to keep the Puch together for some more flying until the snow sticks!" That kind of optimism can't be taught.
