🦅🐦 A Summer of Wildlife Rescues! ❤️

Every animal has a story, and behind every rescue is someone who cared enough to help. 💚

These three beautiful birds are just a few of the many wild animals helped by one of our amazing Bruce Wildlife Help volunteers this summer!

From gulls to birds of prey and waterbirds, our volunteers encounter all kinds of wildlife in need. Each rescue brings its own challenges, but they all share one goal: giving these animals the best possible chance at recovery and a return to the wild. 🌿

What many people don’t realize is just how much goes on behind the scenes. From responding to calls and safely containing injured animals to coordinating transportation and finding appropriate rehabilitation care, it takes an incredible amount of time, patience and compassion.

❤️ A huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer for helping these three birds, and to all the volunteers and wildlife rehabilitators who make this work possible.

We couldn’t do what we do without you!

And to our community, thank you for continuing to look out for the wildlife we share our beautiful Grey-Bruce region with. Sometimes, one caring person really can make all the difference. 🥰

📚🐢 A little local love!

Turtle Crossings Toy Store in Port Elgin has a wonderful selection of children’s books — and now a special shelf featuring books by local authors, too!

We were so happy to see YET, written by our very own Board Chair, Sandi Holland included in the collection. ❤️

Sandi was one of the driving forces behind the creation of Bruce Wildlife Help, and continues to give so much of her time, energy and heart to helping our organization grow and support wildlife in our community.

Even more special, Sandi generously donates a portion of the proceeds from YET to Bruce Wildlife Help, making every copy purchased another little way to support local wildlife. 🐾🦉🦝

🐇 This is who you could help. 💛

We were absolutely blown away by the response to our volunteer driver post yesterday — multiple new drivers have already signed up, with even more applications on the way! Thank you, Grey-Bruce. ❤️

And if you’re still thinking about joining us, meet two of the little lives your help could make a difference for.

These tiny Snowshoe Hare leverets were found on an active construction site this summer, surrounded by heavy equipment and excavation. Their mom was likely caring for them — and normally, that means the very best thing to do is leave them exactly where they are. But in this case, the immediate danger of the construction site meant they needed help and a decision was made to bring them into rehabilitation.

A leveret is a baby hare. Unlike baby rabbits, leverets are born fully furred, with their eyes open and ready to move. They’re incredibly sensitive to stress, which makes careful handling and getting them to an experienced wildlife rehabilitator especially important.

That’s where our volunteer drivers come in. 🚗 💚

You don’t need to be a wildlife expert. Sometimes helping an animal simply means being the person who can safely get them from where they were found to where they can receive the specialized care they need.

🚗 VOLUNTEER DRIVERS NEEDED! 🐾

To this wonderful community, can we ask for your help? Sometimes, the only thing standing between an injured or orphaned wild animal and the care they need is a ride. ❤️

Bruce Wildlife Help is looking to grow our team of volunteer drivers across Grey-Bruce, Ontario.

We know driving an animal to a wildlife rehabilitation centre can be a big ask — trips can involve travelling roughly 100–200 km, depending on where you’re starting from and where the animal needs to go. Most of the wildlife we help is transported to rehabilitation centres in the Norfolk County or Simcoe County areas.

We typically need volunteer drivers a couple times per week, sometimes more in the summer.

Imagine if we had 50–100 volunteer drivers in our network. That could mean each person might only be called upon once a year — or even less. 🙌

There is no minimum commitment and no pressure to take a trip. When we need transportation help, we put the request out to our volunteer group. If you’re available and the trip works for you, put up your hand. If not, someone else can help.

You don’t need wildlife experience. You just need a vehicle, some time when you’re available, and a desire to help. One drive can make the difference between an animal getting the specialized care it needs or having nowhere to go.

And joining us just got easier! 🎉 We’ve created a new, much simpler online volunteer registration and waiver form.

💚 Helping wildlife doesn’t always require a rescue.

Keeping cats indoors, checking the lawn before mowing, slowing down at dawn and dusk, making windows safer for birds and simply sharing good wildlife information can all make a difference.

Small choices multiplied across a community can have a pretty big impact. 🌎🐦

⚠️ An important reminder for wildlife — and a huge thank you to Procyon Wildlife. ❤️

Something as simple as an iced coffee lid can become incredibly dangerous for wildlife. Please take a moment to read and share this important message from Procyon Wildlife, and consider the small steps we can all take to make our garbage and recycling safer for the animals around us.

We also want to take this opportunity to say a HUGE thank you to the incredible team at Procyon Wildlife.

At Bruce Wildlife Help, our volunteers can rescue, transport and advocate for animals in need — but we rely on licensed wildlife rehabilitation centres to provide the specialized care that comes next. Procyon accepts and cares for so many of the animals we help, and quite simply, we could not do what we do without organizations like them.

Wildlife rehabilitation takes an enormous amount of time, expertise, compassion and resources. We are incredibly grateful to have partners like Procyon who are there when these animals need them most. ❤️🦨🦝🐿️

🦨🌲 Back Where They Belong!

One of our favourite parts of wildlife rescue is getting to see moments like this. ❤️

These little skunks needed some help earlier this summer, and thanks to the care and dedication of one of our amazing Bruce Wildlife Help volunteers, they were eventually ready for the best part — release day!

Watching them cautiously explore their surroundings and head off into the forest is exactly what we hope for with every rescue: a second chance at life in the wild. 🌿
