BC Movement Arts Society BCMAS is establishing annual contemporary dance series held throughout the year. In dance, we believe there is no substitute for live performance.

Based in Sointula on Malcolm island, the BC Movement Arts Society (BCMAS) brings rural and urban together by presenting professional local, national and international contemporary dance performances, creation residencies to rural areas of BC. BCMAS is one of the few professional dance organizations based in and serving rural and remote under-served communities, and we are honoured to be located within the unceded Kwakwaka’wakw territories of the ‘Namgis, Kwakiutl, and Mamalilikala Nations. Small rural cities and coastal communities are largely deprived of this opportunity and it is very expensive for people living in these areas to travel to large urban centres to see Canadian and international professional dance performances. Our presentation series moving forward will include for each artist/company presented in addition to our home base of Malcolm Island, shows in neighbouring Port McNeill (at the GateHouse Theatre) and the ‘Namgis Nation/Alert Bay (in the Laurence Ambers Memorial Recreation Center). Led by a professional seasoned dance artist, festival director and arts manager
(Mary-Louise Albert) as well as a professional artistic associate (dancer/choreographer Rebecca Margolick), Advisor's (Andrea Cranmer, ‘Namgis cultural teacher and spiritual leader), Annemarie Koch (community leader) and Livona Ellis (programming advisor) and a Board of Directors versed in professional, education, and business operations: (Artemis Gordon, Pamela Rosa, Dr. Michael Margolick, Laurie Rowan and Brenda Jemar).

BC Movement Arts Society is bringing the North Island Contemporary Dance Series to the Regier Theatre for opening night of our 2026-27 season, BUNKER & FORTRESS, featuring Rebecca Margolick and Livona Ellis. 🩰✨

A solo and duet in a powerful exploration of femininity and endurance, live in an intimate, historic venue right in the heart of the Comox Valley.

This is contemporary dance the way it's meant to be experienced: up close, unfiltered, and full of feeling. 🔥

⫸Rebecca Margolick - a dancer and choreographer whose work has been presented in thirteen countries, from Italy to Israel to Costa Rica.

Two works. One unforgettable night. 🎭

Presented by BC Movement Arts Society.

BUNKER is a solo about the relentless pressures placed on the female body over generations, repression, resistance, and resilience, all held in a single body on stage. It has toured internationally across Italy, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Poland, Mexico, Singapore, and the US, picking up multiple choreography awards along the way. 🏆

FORTRESS follows, a duet built from stillness and simplicity that grows into a rigorous, driving physicality, a raw testament to endurance and the resilience of the female body. It's rooted in the matriarchs who shaped both artists, and it does not let go easily.

Together, they make for an evening of searing, physical dance on resilience and strength.

🎉 This September, BC Movement Arts Society is bringing IN CONVERSATION to four North Island communities - a night of tap dance and live jazz built entirely on the spot.

Danny Nielsen danced on his first international stage at just 23, and here he's joined by pianist/percussionist Kristian Alexandrov, whose playing appears on three Juno-nominated records, and bassist Miles Hill, who's recorded alongside artists like Van Morrison and Michael Bublé.

One review called the show "full of jazzy joy" - with Danny's feet as much an instrument as Kristian's piano and Miles's bass. It's built completely live, so no two nights are quite the same.
