πŸš’ Training Never Stops πŸš’

Last week, members of the Smiths Falls Fire Department spent time sharpening their skills with aerial operations training while also taking the opportunity to become more familiar with the Town’s new bridge.

Regular training is an important part of ensuring our firefighters are prepared for a wide variety of emergencies. Whether it’s operating specialized equipment, reviewing access routes, or learning the unique features of new infrastructure in our community, every training opportunity helps us better serve the residents of Smiths Falls.

During the training, crews captured this incredible photo showcasing both our aerial apparatus and the new bridgeβ€”a great reminder of the dedication our firefighters bring to protecting our community every day.

πŸ”₯πŸš’ What Is It Wednesday? πŸš’πŸ”₯

This week’s tool is a Hot Stick!

A hot stick is a specialized insulated tool used by firefighters and utility crews to safely move or operate electrical equipment from a distance. It helps protect responders from electrical shock when dealing with downed power lines, damaged utility equipment, or energized hazards at emergency scenes.

⚑ Why is it important?
When power lines are involved, electricity can travel through unexpected paths β€” including the ground, metal fences, puddles, and even vehicles. A hot stick allows crews to maintain a safer distance while helping secure the area until hydro crews arrive.

🧯 Firefighter Safety Tip:
If you ever see a downed power line:
❌ Stay back at least 10 metres (33 feet)
❌ Never touch the wire or anything in contact with it
βœ… Call 9-1-1 and your local utility provider immediately

Have you ever seen one of these tools in action?

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Pride Month in Smiths Falls πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

As Pride Month begins, the Smiths Falls Fire Department would like to reaffirm our support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ members of our community.

Last week, the Pride crosswalk in Smiths Falls was damaged. While the damage was disappointing to see, it does not change what the crosswalk represents: a community that strives to be welcoming, inclusive, and respectful of all people.

At the Smiths Falls Fire Department, we are committed to serving everyone in our community with professionalism, compassion, and respect. We believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported, regardless of who they are or who they love.

This Pride Month, we stand with our friends, neighbours, family members, and colleagues in celebrating diversity and fostering a community where everyone belongs.

Happy Pride Month, Smiths Falls. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆβ€οΈπŸš’

Smiths Falls Fire Department is excited to participate in the EOFA games this year.
Our friends in Mississippi Mills are hosting and have shared lots of really great info.

Hope to see you there!

πŸš’ Watch Fireground Skills in Action at the EOFA GamesπŸš’

On Saturday, 20 June 2026, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department is proud to host the 114th Eastern Ontario Firefighters Association Convention in Pakenham. The day begins with the Opening Ceremony and Captains’ Meeting at 8:30 am, with competition starting at 9:00 am. The Games will take place off Margaret Street, behind the Stewart Community Centre, and admission is free for spectators.

The EOFA Games are all about strength, teamwork, speed, coordination, and skill under pressure. Throughout the day, firefighters from across Eastern Ontario will compete in a series of demanding events that reflect the physical challenges, teamwork, and task-based problem-solving required on the fireground.

Here are some of the events you’ll see in action:

πŸ”₯ Hose Coupling Events
In the 4 Person Hose Coupling and 8 Person Hose Coupling, teams race to connect hose lengths quickly and correctly under pressure. These events test teamwork, communication, coordination, and speed β€” all critical skills when every second counts on scene.

πŸͺœ Ladder Climb Events
The 3 Person Ladder Climb and 5 Person Bunker Gear Ladder Climb challenge competitors to move efficiently while carrying out a physically demanding task. The bunker gear version adds an extra layer of difficulty by requiring firefighters to perform while wearing full protective gear, demonstrating strength, endurance, and control.

πŸƒ Bunker Gear Relay
This event combines speed, stamina, and teamwork, with firefighters moving through a relay while dressed in bunker gear. It’s a crowd favourite that highlights the physical demands firefighters face while operating in full equipment.

πŸ’§ Hose Lay and Insert Events
The 5 Person Hose Lay (Wye) and 4 Person Insert feature technical hose work that requires precision and teamwork. These events reflect the kind of coordinated actions firefighters use when deploying hose lines and setting up water operations at emergency scenes.

🚨 Efficiency Events
The 5 Person Efficiency and 8 Person Efficiency events bring together multiple firefighting skills in one fast-paced challenge. These events test how well a crew can work together to complete a sequence of tasks smoothly, safely, and quickly.

πŸͺ£ Bucket Brigade
The 8 Person Bucket Brigade is a fast-paced, team-driven event inspired by traditional firefighting methods. Crews work together to fill buckets from a portable water tank (port-a-tank) and pass them person-to-person up a ladder, just as firefighters did in the early days before modern fire apparatus. Success depends on rhythm, coordination, and teamworkβ€”making it both a challenging and highly entertaining event for spectators.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Chiefs Race
The Chiefs Race adds a bit of friendly rivalry and fun to the day, giving fire chiefs the chance to join the action and show off their competitive spirit.

Whether you know the sport or are seeing it for the first time, the EOFA Games are a great opportunity to watch firefighters put their training, teamwork, and determination on display. It’s fast-paced, exciting, and a great way to support the departments that serve our communities.

Come out, cheer loud, and be part of a proud local tradition in Pakenham on June 20th.πŸ“£

Wednesday night training at the Smiths Falls Fire Department was a mixed bag of skills and knowledge!

Our firefighters spent the evening sharpening up on a variety of equipment, tools, and operations β€” reviewing how things work, why we do them, and making sure we’re always ready when the call comes in. Training nights are an important part of staying prepared and keeping our skills fresh.

Whether it’s hands-on practice, equipment familiarization, or reviewing procedures, every training night helps build a stronger and safer team. πŸš’πŸ”₯

πŸš’πŸ“Έ What Is It Wednesday? πŸ“ΈπŸš’

This week’s feature is the Smiths Falls Fire Department Drone!

Our drone is an important tool that helps firefighters quickly assess emergency scenes from the air. Equipped with thermal imaging and powerful lighting capabilities, it can assist during searches, large incidents, hazardous situations, and nighttime operations.

This past Sunday, May 17th at 20:53 hrs, Montague Fire Department was paged by Smiths Falls Dispatch for a plane crash. Once crews arrived on scene, the aircraft could not be located.

Montague Fire requested mutual aid from the Smiths Falls Fire Department to deploy our drone team. Smiths Falls Fire arrived on scene at 22:16 hrs and had the drone airborne shortly after. Using thermal imaging technology, the aircraft was successfully located at 22:26 hrs.

The drone was then used to illuminate the area, assisting first responders in safely reaching and caring for the pilot, who was transferred into EMS care.

This incident highlights how valuable drone technology has become in emergency response and how strong teamwork between agencies can lead to a positive outcome.

πŸ‘ A big thank you to:
πŸš’ Montague Township Montague Fire Department
πŸš“ Ontario Provincial Police - East Region
πŸš‘ County Paramedic Service

Excellent teamwork by everyone involved.
