We're reaching out on behalf of two people we deeply admire and consider dear friends: Eva and Jonathan, founders of the Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in Summerland, BC.

On August 7th, one of the fastest-moving wildfires BC has seen this year tore through Summerland and destroyed the wildlife rehabilitation centre Eva, Jonathan and their team of volunteers spent years building.

For years, the team at IWRS have poured their lives into rescuing and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife across the BC interior, doing the same long nights and hard days that anyone in this field knows so well. When the Bald Range wildfire reached their property, they had very little time to get out.

In less than an hour, they loaded every wildlife patient in their care and got them to safety. Then, as they drove away, they watched on their security cameras as the entire facility was engulfed in flames, until the cameras went black. The centre they built, the enclosures, the equipment, the space where countless animals were given a second chance, all of it is gone.

The good news is that every animal in their care made it out safely. They are now being temporarily housed and cared for at Kamloops Wildlife Park's rewilding facility, and the wildlife rehab community from across BC has been coming together to support them.

We don't know yet how or when they'll be able to rebuild. What we do know is that the animals of the BC interior need this centre back, and Eva, Jonathan and their amazing team of volunteers will need support to make that happen.

We are asking our community to help us make sure the funds are there when they're ready. Every donation, big or small, goes directly toward helping two friends and fellow wildlife rehabilitators rebuild the centre and get back to the work they love.

While forest fires are popping up fast everywhere in BC , we are blessed we are still safe. Please take care everyone. Keep your eyes out for wildlife and don't speed while traveling as the animals are also fleeing the fires.

Meet Sriracha. Last month, a Conservation Officer picked up this small bear cub on the side of the road after she was struck by a vehicle. He had little expectation that she would survive. However, when he checked on her after transporting her away from the accident scene, she was awake and looking back at him.

At NLWS, we found she was showing some neurological symptoms, so she spent a few weeks in isolation care. She was given fresh greens and specialized bear cub formula while we monitored her recovery. Slowly, her symptoms improved.

Once she was strong and healthy enough, we completed her full intake, including an ear tag and a DNA sample, and moved her into the big enclosure with the other cubs.

She still has a ways to go, but she's on her way to a second chance.

This is true for most species. Please let professionals do the best they can and give the little ones a fighting chance to return to the wild. Most of the time we can’t fix the damage what hours or days of wrong care have done.

🚨IMPORTANT PSA! 🚨

It's now squirrel fall birthing season and we are again seeing orphans being fed improperly. 😦

Can you spot the difference?
We posted about this earlier in the season, but as babies continue to flood our hospital, we thought everyone could use a reminder.

When humans see a baby animal in need, our nurturing instinct kicks in. We love that about our wildlife-loving community! However, as much as our hearts want to help, our best intentions can sometimes have unintended consequences.

The grey squirrels in this photo are the same age. So what’s the difference? The smaller squirrel was incorrectly fed domestic pet formula while the larger squirrel spent more time with his mom AND was provided with the proper squirrel diet by our trained staff and volunteers.

If you find an orphan that you think needs help:

⚠️DO NOT FEED THE ORPHAN! This can make our jobs MUCH harder and can even lead to the death of the very baby you’re trying to save.

🐿 Call your local wildlife rehabilitation center (sometimes “orphans” aren’t actually orphaned). Mom always knows how to raise her babies better than humans!

🐇 If the orphan really does need help, follow the rehabilitator’s advice on how to safely contain the baby (you can use a sock full of rice, microwaved for 30 seconds, and placed in the container for warmth).

🦨 Transport the baby to your closest rehab center (most rehab centers are admitting so many new patients right now; it helps if we can depend on our community to transport animals to us).

WOW! Thank you so very much for putting on this fundraiser!

Unfortunately last weekend we lost one of our little local bear cubs and we got to thinking this is a "Beary" good time to raise awareness for local wild life rescue. So starting today until next Wednesday or while supplies last all of our remaining annuals and veggies in our little Kimberley greenhouse will be by donation to raise funds for Northern Lights Wildlife Society . All our annuals are 50% off or you can choose your donation amount. So let's plant some flowers and save some wildlife!!!
