📢 Saddle up: the 107th BVX Fall Fair Parade rolls down Main Street tonight!

A HUGE thank you to Chamber member RE/MAX Bulkley Valley for once again presenting this beloved community tradition and helping kick off Bulkley Valley Exhibition weekend in true Bulkley Valley style. Expect creative floats, local organizations and plenty of familiar favourites!

Tonight - Wednesday, August 26

A friendly safety reminder: please remain off the parade route and encourage children to stay safely along the sidewalk. Parade participants are asked to hand out candy rather than toss it: don’t worry, the treats will still come to you!

📢 Canada-U.S. Trade and Tariff Update

The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce is closely monitoring Canada - U.S. trade developments and their potential impacts on businesses in Smithers, Northern B.C., and across the province.

Following the introduction of 50% U.S. tariffs on approximately $27.6 billion in Canadian goods on Saturday, the Government of Canada has announced matching counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion in U.S.-origin imports. Effective September 8, 2026, Canadian counter-tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% will apply to products including steel and aluminum, dairy, fish and seafood, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, electronics, furniture, and apparel.

These measures may affect more than businesses exporting directly to the United States. Local companies purchasing American equipment, machinery, technology, building materials, food products, replacement parts, or other operational inputs could experience higher costs, supply-chain disruptions, and increased uncertainty. The federal government has also announced $7.5 billion in new and expanded support for affected businesses and workers, including:

• Regional assistance for small and medium-sized businesses
• Additional BDC financing and lower eligibility thresholds
• Funding to help businesses adapt, diversify, and maintain investments
• Worker-retention, retraining, and employment-support measures

A federal tariff-remission process is also available in exceptional circumstances, particularly when required goods cannot reasonably be sourced within Canada or from non-U.S. suppliers.

If your business is being affected, we want to hear from you. Whether you are losing U.S. customers, facing increased costs or supply delays, adjusting your operations, reconsidering investments, or experiencing workforce pressures, please share what you are seeing.
Local business experiences strengthen our advocacy and help the Chamber network communicate where timely, practical support is most needed. Even a brief response is valuable.

The Smithers District Chamber of Commerce will continue to share reliable information, connect businesses with available resources, and advocate through the provincial and national Chamber network.

We are listening. We are advocating. We are here to support local business.
