The Onion Cabin got some much-needed TLC this weekend from a handful of our awesome volunteers!

The crew got a lot done:
• Scraped the old exterior paint off and repainted the exterior
• Painted the interior floors and seating benches
• Repaired and replaced some back deck boards
• Hauled up a load of firewood
• Fixed and replaced the wood stove pipe
• Tightened a whole lot of screws

This is exactly where your membership fees go. As a non-profit, we rely on membership fees and volunteers to keep our cabins, trails, and facilities maintained, so you can continue to enjoy them!!

Big thanks to the crew who gave up their weekend to get this work done. We appreciate you! 🤘

A huge thank you to Wetzin'kwa Community Forest Corporation for their continued support of the Smithers Snowmobile Association, with $10,000 towards the Dome Bridge Project!

Thanks to several generous contributions from WCFC, the Smithers Snowmobile Association has purchased two modern snowcats, and built a new cabin on the Microwave.

We are so fortunate to have this organization in the Bulkley Valley providing both employment opportunities for the forestry sector and funds for local groups/projects. Thank you to the staff and board of directors of WCFC for all your hard work!!

- Two Call-Outs to the Microwave Area in One Week -

This week Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue responded to a stuck snowmobile group and an injured snowmobiler during two separate callouts in the Microwave area. Weather and snow conditions played major roles in both callouts, which highlight important reminders for anyone heading into the backcountry this winter.

- Be Ready to Spend the Night -

A common theme in both recent rescues: be prepared to spend the night outdoors if things don’t go according to plan. Weather changes quickly, visibility can drop without warning, and poor weather or limited daylight can delay flights and make evacuations more challenging.

- Plan Ahead -

Even when it seems obvious to check the avalanche bulletin, remember there are other hazards—shorter days, flat light, cold temperatures, poor visibility, and early-season snowpack conditions.

Before you go:
✔️ Check the avalanche forecast: https://avalanche.ca/map
✔️ Discuss turn-around times with your group
✔️ Leave a trip plan with a friend or family member
✔️ Pack the essentials to stay warm, dry, and shelter if needed

🙌 Huge Thanks

A huge shoutout to the Smithers Snowmobile Association for maintaining backcountry cabins in the Bulkley Valley and keeping them stocked with wood. During last night’s callout, the nearby cabin was a truly valuable resource, providing a warm, dry place for companions to care for an injured snowmobiler.

And thank you to Russ, the groomer, whose work on the trail made the evacuation significantly easier and safer for everyone involved!

- What Went Well -

Both groups involved in the recent incidents had:

A communication device, which allowed us to respond more efficiently with the proper gear and personnel.

A nearby cabin, providing warmth and shelter while help was on the way.

Stay prepared, ride smart, and take care of one another out there.
