Happy History Wednesday. Did you know? The Memorial Hall at Branch 79 was once a WWII Air Force barracks! This picture shows the barracks soon after it was moved and attached to the front of the Rectory in 1950. It was purchased and moved from the Jarvis Air School for just over $6,000. By 1957, this part of the building was transformed again, but that's for another History Wednesday. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Simcoe Legion having received its Charter on Nov 20, 1926. It also marks the 100th anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion - National Headquarters

Happy History Wednesday! In recognition of this past Sunday's International Women's Day, here's a big shoutout to a group that was once the backbone of our Legion, the Ladies Auxiliary. The Br 79 L.A. was founded in 1931, with its first president (affectionately known as Ma Holden) using her own money to run bingos to raise funds for the Branch. Over the years, the L.A. gifted thousands of dollars to the Legion. If it wasn't for their immense dedication, the Memorial Hall and addition would not have been possible - among many other initiatives. Pictured are members of the L.A. in the kitchen from about 1985. Do you recognize anyone? This year marks the 100th anniversary of The Royal Canadian Legion - National Headquarters along with Branch 79 which received its Charter on Nov. 20, 1926.
