Last week we welcomed Rebecka Ibbotson, Fund Development Coordinator with the Children's Health Foundation of Vancouver Island, as our guest speaker, and winner of our Fall donation. Many of us had an “aha!” moment when she reminded us the organization was formerly the Queen Alexandra Foundation — a name we definitely recognized!
Rebecka shared the Foundation’s inspiring history, founded nearly 100 years ago by women who saw the need for better children’s health care. In 2027, they’ll celebrate their 100th anniversary.
Our donation went directly to their Bear Essentials program, which fills the gaps where health care ends — supporting families with travel costs, accommodations, specialized equipment, and more.
Rebecka shared with us powerful stories of local families whose lives have been changed through Bear Essentials:
💙 Jax, a 13-year-old from Sidney with cerebral palsy and autism, received a transfer belt and specialized walker that helped him gain new mobility and independence — even learning to navigate stairs at school.
💙 Roland, whose coordination challenges led to a serious head injury, discovered an adaptive tricycle that changed everything. Thanks to Bear Essentials, he now has one at home that helps him stay active, safe, and confident outdoors.
Rebecka closed by thanking all our members, not just on behalf of the Foundation, but for the impact 100+ Women Who Care Saanich Peninsula continues to make across our community.
We are so grateful for the difference you make. 💛
