Strathcona Shelter Society Ltd. "A Safe Place"

Strathcona Shelter Society Ltd. "A Safe Place" A Safe Place is a 35-bed emergency shelter for women, with or without children, fleeing abuse.

In 1981, A Safe Place opened its doors to women and children seeking shelter, safety, and supports to overcome domestic violence and sexual assault. Safe Talk, originally a program of A Safe Place, provided support to victims of sexual assault. As the demands for both domestic violence and sexual assault services increased, we expanded programming to include community outreach, an Elder Abuse Line

, public education, and support or victims of Human Trafficking. SAFFRON later emerged as our region’s provider for sexual assault services and support.

As the FIFA Club World Cup captures the attention of soccer fans around the world, Women’s Shelters Canada is raising awareness about an important issue that can accompany major sporting events.

Research has found that reports of domestic violence can increase during major sporting events. While sports do not cause violence, heightened emotions, alcohol consumption and other pressures can increase risk in situations where abuse is already present.

The Make a Game Plan campaign encourages individuals experiencing violence to think ahead and create a safety plan. One important step is preparing a Go Bag with essential items and documents that can be accessed quickly if needed. Learn more at MakeAGamePlan.ca.

A Safe Place recently had the opportunity to participate in the WESeniors Strathcona Roadshow, an initiative that brings information, resources and community connections directly to smaller communities throughout Strathcona County.

The Roadshow is a wonderful way to meet residents where they are, share information about available services and connect with people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn about local organizations.

We are grateful to WESeniors Strathcona for organizing these events and helping strengthen connections across the county.

If you or someone you know needs help, call or text our crisis and shelter intake line 24/7 at (780) 464-7233. You can also call toll-free at 1 (888) 252-7233.

June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the abuse, neglect and mistreatment experienced by older adults around the world.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional and financial abuse, as well as neglect. It is often hidden and underreported, leaving many older adults to face harm in silence. Raising awareness is an important step toward recognizing the warning signs and ensuring older adults are treated with the dignity, respect and care they deserve.

Today, we join others around the world in supporting the safety, well-being and rights of older adults in our communities.

If you or someone you know needs help, call our toll-free crisis and shelter intake line 24/7 at (780) 464-7233 or 1 (888) 252-7233.

Summer is often associated with vacations, family gatherings, and time spent together. However, research shows that incidents of intimate partner violence tend to increase during the summer months.

Changes in routine, financial pressures, childcare responsibilities, and spending more time together can add stress to relationships. While these factors do not cause abuse, they can increase risk in situations where violence is already present.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at home, regardless of the season. Support remains available year-round for individuals and families experiencing domestic violence.

Call our 24/7 crisis and shelter intake line at 780-464-7233 or 1-888-252-7233.

You may have heard the recent news about provincial funding changes affecting women's shelters across Alberta. Unfortunately, A Safe Place is among the organizations that will experience a 5% reduction in funding beginning July 1.

While this funding reduction presents challenges, we want to reassure our service users, referral partners and community that A Safe Place remains open and fully committed to providing safety, support, services and referrals to those experiencing domestic abuse. The need for these services has not changed, and neither has our commitment to those we serve.

In addition, we are actively exploring solutions to address the funding shortfall without reducing the services our community relies on. Our focus remains on ensuring that those who need us continue to receive the support they need.

Thank you for your ongoing support. With the strength of our community, we are confident that we can navigate this challenge and continue making a positive impact.

June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to recognize and learn about the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

It is also an opportunity to better understand the challenges that continue to affect Indigenous communities today. Nationally, Indigenous women are eight times more likely to be victims of intimate partner homicide than non-Indigenous women.

At A Safe Place, we recognize the importance of learning from Indigenous voices and understanding the historical and systemic factors that contribute to these inequities. Building safer communities begins with awareness, education, and a commitment to supporting all women and families with dignity and respect.

We encourage everyone to take time this month to learn more about Indigenous history, cultures, and experiences.

A few weeks ago, a goose that staff affectionately named Lucy chose a spot near our shelter to build her nest and lay her eggs. Since then, staff have been eagerly checking in and waiting for the big day. Over the weekend, Lucy's goslings finally hatched, making Lucy our shelter's newest mom.

It seems Lucy knew this truly is A Safe Place.

We are delighted to welcome these tiny new neighbours and grateful for the little moments of joy they bring.
