More than a quarter of Quebecers are caregivers

In Quebec, 27 per cent of people aged 15 and over act as caregivers, representing approximately 2,076,000 individuals. The majority of them (71 per cent) provide care to someone aged 65 and over. This is according to the initial findings of the 2024-2025 Quebec Survey on the Health and Well-being of Caregivers, conducted by the Institut de la statistique du Québec. This study paints a picture of caregiving in Quebec.
A caregiver performs various activities to support relatives or people in their social circle, without being paid or volunteering. This support can take the form of assistance with transportation, shopping, household chores, personal care, help with administrative tasks, emotional support, or any other activity.
Women are proportionally more likely than men to be caregivers. Across the entire population, 30 per cent of women act as caregivers, compared to 25 per cent of men. Approximately 40 per cent of all caregivers are between 45 and 64 years old, with caregivers aged 15 to 29 being 13 per cent, and 30 to 44-year-olds being 21 per cent. The remaining 25 per cent of caregivers are over the age of 65 themselves. ..

Geneviève Hébert celebrates local volunteers

Geneviève Hébert, MNA for Saint-François, recently awarded medals to five volunteers from her riding. Nancy Robert and Donald Warnholtz were honoured for the Lennoxville borough, Mélanie Boisvert for the Brompton district, Guylaine Blouin for the Coaticook MRC, and Michel Montmigny for the Fleurimont borough.
“This year, the recipients of the ‘Médaille de la Députée’ (MNA Medal) stand out for their exemplary actions, particularly in sports, culture, and physical health. Theirs are outstanding achievements that can serve as models.”
A statement from Hébert’s office provided details about each of the medal recipients.
Nancy Robert has been deeply involved in social, cultural, and heritage development. Since 2005, she has been the executive director of the Uplands Cultural and Heritage Centre. She is leading the Uplands Estate Renewal Project, the most significant transformation of the site in over 25 years. The project includes the renewal of the permanent exhibition, thanks to funding from the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications. Nancy is working to maintain Uplands as a vibrant, welcoming heritage site, fully integrated into its community.
Donald Warnholtz dedicated 37 years to citizen well-being, notably as a program manager at the CIUSSS de l’Estrie from 1978 to 2014, when he became executive director of the Dixville Foundation, where he has contributed for over 30 years to providing support and respite services to people living with autism spectrum disorder or intellectual disabilities. A member of the Townshippers’ Association’s executive committee since 2016 and its president since 2022, he bridges the gap between Francophones and the English-speaking population. Working to ensure equitable access to healthcare for minority communities, he chaired the Regional Health Services Access Committee from 2004 to 2014...

Pax Canadiana, strong and free?

A couple of months ago, I wrote about Dara Vandor's "Pax Americana" series of plaques memorializing the morphing of Canada into the 51st state.
This idea keeps coming back as a side dish to whatever the good folk in Washington D.C. cook up. Most recently, it surfaced again at the 80th birthday party the "man of peace" threw for himself, where he donned a cap captioned "U.S.A." for a fight between an American and a Canadian contestant. News reports said the crowd chanted, "Canada is the 51st state." Again...

Quebec government bans energy drinks for youth under 16

On June 11, the National Assembly adopted Bill 9, “An Act to prevent the harmful effects of energy drinks on the health of young people.” This act, once implemented in six months, will ban the sale of energy drinks to all youth under 16 years of age. This comes after15-year-old Zachary Miron passed away after drinking a can of Red Bull energy drink combined with his ADHD medication.
Like with alcohol, customers will have to, upon request by an employee, show a valid government-issued identification card with the person’s name, photo, and birthday. To the same effect, Bill 9 will ban the sale of energy drinks in vending machines and online where a customer’s age cannot be verified. Additionally, the law states that “the giving away of energy drinks is considered to be a sale of energy drinks.”..

Community Aid observes World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15 marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day to raise the visibility of elder abuse and to enhance seniors’ safety and well-being.
As a community organization that offers services to seniors, Lennoxville and District Community Aid works to highlight this important issue, and to guide the community to resources that can offer needed help and support. Every year, we wear our purple ribbons, the symbol of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, to show our support of a world acting together to overcome elder abuse. Please feel free to drop by our office if you would like your own purple ribbon to wear this year!
What is elder abuse?
Elder abuse is a single or repeated act that causes harm or distress to a senior, and it can also include a lack of appropriate action. It is most often committed by a person of trust to the senior, such as a family member, a close acquaintance, someone caring for the senior, or a healthcare provider. It often happens when there is an imbalance of power, and the person of trust either limits or takes control of the senior’s rights and freedoms. Elder abuse can happen to anyone, in any setting.
Financial abuse, physical abuse, including sexual abuse, psychological or emotional abuse, and neglect, are all types of elder abuse.
Seniors experience abuse when there is failure to provide needed care, medication, food, clothing, or assistance with basic needs. Withdrawing money from a senior’s account for the individual’s own purposes, cashing a cheque without authorization, limiting a senior’s access to information about their own assets, and pressuring seniors to make changes to their wills, are also examples. Instances of abuse can also include isolating a senior from family, friends, and activities, intimidating and humiliating a senior, and treating him or her like a child. ..

City of Sherbrooke to revise Lennoxville’s bilingual status directive

The City of Sherbrooke confirmed in an email to The Record the morning of Tuesday, June 16, the Borough of Lennoxville will not be required to conduct a verbal verification to determine whether a person can be served in English, due to its bilingual status.
A revised version of a directive presented at the May meeting of the Lennoxville Borough council, which caused concern and confusion over verification requirements, will be tabled July 7 at Sherbrooke City. ..
