New Haskell Library and Opera House Canadian entrance
Record Staff (HB)

The Haskell Library and Opera House Board of Trustees is officially opening a brand-new Canadian entrance. This historic addition ensures uninterrupted access for Canadian patrons to the only library and opera house in the world deliberately built straddling an international border.
This construction follows an unexpected decision by U.S. authorities in March 2025, which restricted traditional Canadian access through the building's historic main entrance...

BU Convocation to honour an Alumnus and an Olympian
Record Staff

In addition to sending students off on their way with degrees, awards and acknowledgments of hard work, a convocation ceremony serves another function. At Bishop’s University (BU), the convocation ceremony also supplies an opportunity to recognize exemplary contributions from notable individuals, by conferring Doctorates of Civil Law to honourands.
This year, just such an honour will be bestowed upon two individuals: Timothy K. Griffin, Former Chair, Connor, Clark & Lunn Private Capital, Co-Chair, Leading the Way Capital Campaign (2012-18) and Marie-Phillip Poulin, C.Q. Elite Athlete and Canadian Women’s Hockey Ambassador Walter Cup Champion with Montreal’s La Victoire. In addition, the contributions of community engagement award winners will be highlighted during the ceremony and awards for scholastic excellence will be granted, according to a press release from the university.
Timothy K. Griffin arrived at Bishop’s in 1968 and quickly became an involved student athlete, student reporter, and theatre kid. He graduated with an English major in 1971. After an eclectic 15-year span of various jobs, he finally “placed himself” at Royal Trust and began a 40-year career in finance, primarily in investment management. Tim has been deeply involved in philanthropic endeavours since the early 80s, mostly as a fundraiser. He continues to volunteer for several organizations such as the Art Canada Institute, Sanctuary Toronto, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation, and Tennis Canada. Tim was a director of the Bishop’s Foundation for 24 years, chairing the Investment Committee for all but his first year on the board.
Marie-Phillip Poulin, C.Q., is one of the most accomplished and influential athletes in the history of women’s ice hockey. As captain of the Montreal Victoire in the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), she led her team to victory in May 2026, capturing the Walter Cup—the league’s championship trophy—and marking a defining moment in the new era of professional women’s hockey. ..

From Phelps Helps this week:
After a year filled with creativity, commitment, and community impact, members of Phelps Helps’ Youth Leadership Committee gathered for an end-of-year retreat at Centre de Villégiature Jouvence. The retreat offered a meaningful opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments, strengthen their connections, and look ahead to future youth advocacy work in the Stanstead area.
The Youth Leadership Committee is made up of local students who apply for the opportunity to take on leadership roles within Phelps Helps. Throughout the year, members help plan youth events, bring forward new ideas, and act as catalysts for positive change in their community. This year’s committee included five dedicated students representing all three local high schools: Alexander Galt, La Ruche, and Stanstead College...

Instead of a featured pet this week, Frontier Animal Society Shelter - Ogden, QC is inviting entries to their annual photo contest!
"This initiative directly supports our ability to continue taking in, caring for, and rehoming animals in need, many of whom have appeared or will appear in this weekly featured pet column, while also celebrating the special bond between people and their dogs.
The third annual contest is now underway and runs until June 16, with a fundraising goal of $5,000 in support of the shelter’s ongoing care for animals. With an increase in owner surrender requests and kitten season in full swing, this is an especially important time for community support.
The contest is open to all dogs. To enter, visit our website at www.safas.ca, where you will find a link to the contest."
