Literacy in Action

Literacy in Action Build on your core literacy skills (reading, writing, digital & more) with LIA! You name it! Did we mention this is free and confidential?! consider joining us!!!

1+1 services are available to English-speaking adults living in the Estrie region of Quebec. We can work on filling out a form, planning a budget, reading to your kids, improving your spelling, setting goals, or getting online. If 1+1 isn’t your style or you like learning new things with others, we also host community-based activities. These are great opportunities to share and learn new skills wi

th folks in your hometown. We often run family literacy programs in Richmond, Bury, Stanstead, Magog, and Lennoxville. It’s important to note that our services and activities are volunteer run so if you are reading this and thinking you’d like to share some of your skills (teaching, planning, cooking, designing, active listening, etc.) Become a tutor, run an online group, make snacks for one of our events, co-host a pop-up activity, join our board of directors; there are many ways you can be a part of Literacy in Action. If you have gotten this far in our story, we encourage you to get in touch with us! Eager for more info? Let us tell you a bit about our history. Incorporated in 1987, Literacy in Action / Action Alpha is a volunteer nonprofit organization funded by the Quebec government to promote English literacy skill development in the Estrie region of the Eastern Townships in Quebec. We have been exploring the many ways to empower individuals in our community and maximize their potential in ways that benefit themselves and society at large. If you have questions, ideas, goals you’d like us to know about, please contact us. We would love to hear from you.

Have you participated in LIA activities or benefited from some of our direct services over the years? We are gathering testimonials to jazz up our website and to help inspire others to join Literacy in Action’s hands-on learning community. Maybe you have been involved with LIA as a learner, volunteer, animator, or family member - enjoying an evening making art or sharing food. We want to hear from you!

We are looking for brief statements about what you like about Literacy in Action and what keeps you coming back - maybe it’s accessing an English-speaking activity for free, meeting new people in the community, or learning how to use your computer or smart phone to keep in touch with friends and family.

Be sure to know, we will keep your testimony anonymous. So please take 5 minutes to fill out this link! https://forms.gle/bZYSxHZDHs9ewmvU9

You will be helping us spread the word and increase the likelihood that someone who is hesitant or shy to use our services might show up because you helped them realize how LIA can be a service and place for them too.

POV: you pull up a seat at the table

Here’s a peek into our StoryMakers workshops! We’ve been having a great time these past few weeks, getting to know each other through the stories we share and experimenting with creative forms of storytelling (Serena LIA's favourite is oral storytelling, and Ann loves to tell stories with a combination of visual and written components!). There’s always snacks, art and writing supplies, and tools that prompt us to reflect on our learning stories!

What are your storytelling essentials? Tell us in the comments!

A few weeks back we had our annual Health and Safety training, and we thought we’d give you a peek! It may seem dull to some, but it’s moments like these that allow our team to learn & grow together - and be sure that we can help ensure everyone is safe. So yeah, we get a little excited about health and safety at Literacy in Action.

We reviewed policies and incident report forms - so we can learn through our mistakes too. We got a refresher on our safety tools like fire extinguishers and first aid kits, and even headed to our meeting point on the corner during a fire drill.

Thanks to Angie and Serena LIA - our Health & Safety Team - for all their hard work to keep our staff and visitors safe, both at the office and in the field!

We asked, you answered!

Here are a few photos from our HELP Tutor Orientation and our Meet & Greet that took place on Saturday, March 21st!

What a great, thoughtful group. Thank you to all the tutors who were engaged and excited about the program. And thanks to everyone who saw our previous post and spread the word!

We had a great time coming together as a team to support Tanya, HELP’s Community Coordinator, and launch the spring session. We even got an opportunity to practice our problem solving skills when a breaker was tripped as we started the training 🤪

Here are just a few photos from our previous HELP sessions. Our next one is coming up fast, and we're on the lookout for volunteers!

As a volunteer, you will meet regularly with 1-2 healthcare workers from the Estrie region to help them practice spoken English in one-to-one or small group conversations. You get to support them as they work on building their confidence and abilities to communicate with the English-speaking patients of the CIUSSSE.

You don’t need to be a professional tutor, just need a gift for conversation.

In person or online.
Dates: Week of March 30 to week of May 18 (for a total of 8 weeks)
Frequency: Meet once a week for a total of 60-90 minutes
Tutor training/Meet & Greet: Saturday, March 21

Volunteer Application Link: https://forms.gle/ZPsH9voUx9WL3iFB8

Volunteer registration deadline extended to: Friday, March 13, 2026, but the sooner the better!
