The LDWC “Take the Wheel” Driver’s License Bursary is designed to support women who are facing financial barriers in obtaining their learner driver’s license and help get women behind the wheel.

For 2026, the bursary seeks to help three women obtain their learner driver's license by covering the costs associated with Phase 1 driving lessons at an accredited driving school as well as the associated exam and learner permit fees to the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), ensuring that recipients can focus on successfully completing the first phase of their driver’s education without financial stress.

🔸Eligibility Criteria:
· Applicants must identify as women.
· Applicants must demonstrate financial need.
· Applicants must reside in the Estrie region of Quebec (territory served by LDWC).
· Applicants must be ready and eligible to enroll in driving school in fall 2026.

🔸What the Bursary Covers:
· Driving school fees for Phase 1 (theory lessons and course materials)
· SAAQ fees for exam and initial learner’s permit

🔸Application Process
To apply, complete the application form and provide supporting documents demonstrating financial need. Applications will be reviewed by the LDWC bursary committee of the Board of Directors, and successful candidates will be notified within 30 days of the submission deadline.

⚖️ Bailey’s Law is now Canadian law; strengthening Canada’s response to intimate partner violence

In June 2026, Bill C-225, known as Bailey’s Law, received Royal Assent, becoming law in Canada.

What does Bailey’s Law change?

🔹 Recognizing femicide in the Criminal Code
When a woman is murdered by an intimate partner in the context of a pattern of coercive or controlling behaviour, it can now be treated as first-degree murder.

This is an important recognition that lethal violence can be the culmination of a pattern of abuse, coercion and control, rather than an isolated act.

🔹 Deaths resulting from intimate-partner violence are addressed beyond murder
Bailey’s Law also requires courts to consider life imprisonment, with parole ineligibility of 10 to 25 yrs, when manslaughter occurs against an intimate partner in the context of such a pattern.

This recognizes the seriousness of deaths resulting from intimate-partner violence even when the circumstances result in a manslaughter conviction rather than murder.

🔹 A new Criminal Code offence involving violence against an intimate partner
The law creates a specific offence for violence, threatening violence or attempted violence against an intimate partner, strengthening the Criminal Code's recognition of intimate-partner violence as a distinct form of harm.

📱 What about sharing intimate images?
A companion piece of legislation, Bill C-16, the Protecting Victims Act, also became law. It strengthens protections against technology-facilitated abuse, including:

📸 Sharing intimate images without consent is a crime.

⚠️ Threatening to distribute intimate images without consent is also specifically criminalized.

The legislation also expands protections to certain sexually explicit deepfake images and strengthens the response to criminal harassment through technology.

Together, these changes strengthen the Criminal Code's response to different forms of intimate-partner and gender-based violence, from threats and coercive control to physical violence, technology-facilitated abuse, and lethal violence.

💜 Understanding these changes matters. Recognizing patterns of abuse can be an important part of preventing violence and supporting survivors.

🌿 Woman Farmer Spotlight: Mary Neville | Les Serres Mary Neville

As we celebrate the Year of the Woman Farmer, we're proud to recognize Mary Neville of Les Serres Mary Neville in Cookshire-Eaton.

Having grown up in her parents' greenhouse business in Lennoxville, Mary built on decades of family knowledge and experience before opening Les Serres Mary Neville on Chemin Dillon in 2024. Today, she continues her family's greenhouse tradition while building a greenhouse business of her own.

Visitors to her greenhouse will find vibrant annuals, hanging baskets, vegetable seedlings, herbs, and custom planters, along with someone who enjoys sharing her gardening knowledge and helping others succeed. Mary also follows thoughtful growing practices, producing her vegetables without chemical fertilizers or insecticides and using natural spacing methods instead of plant growth regulators in her flower production.

Women farmers strengthen our communities in countless ways—growing food and flowers, sharing their expertise, and helping local agriculture thrive.

Thank you, Mary, for your dedication and for being part of the rich agricultural community of the Eastern Townships. 💚🌸
