DCCBA was proud to support the soft opening of Peddies Jerk in Shelburne! 🙌

Huge congratulations to the team on this milestone. We couldn’t wait to dig in and tried the oxtail and fried chicken with rice and peas + fried plantain.

We’ll be back to work our way through the rest of the menu. Shelburne, stop by and show some love!

It was truly an honour to attend the Toronto Garrison Officers’ Ball—an evening steeped in tradition, excellence, and deep respect for service.

Events like this are more than ceremonial—they are powerful reminders of the importance of legacy, discipline, and shared commitment. The longstanding traditions upheld by the Canadian Armed Forces reflect values that transcend generations: service, honour, unity, and pride.

As President of the Dufferin County Canadian Black Association (DCCBA), this experience resonated deeply with the work we continue to advance in our own community.

At DCCBA, we are equally committed to building and preserving legacy—creating spaces where culture is honoured, contributions are recognized, and future generations are inspired. Whether through our Black History Month celebrations, scholarships, or community initiatives, we are intentional about fostering connection, celebrating excellence, and strengthening the fabric of our community.

Tradition is not just about looking back—it is about carrying forward the values that shape who we are and who we are becoming.

I left the evening reflecting on the importance of continuing to build bridges between communities, honouring those who serve, and ensuring that our own stories, contributions, and traditions are equally preserved and celebrated.

An unforgettable evening of pride, purpose, and connection. 🇨🇦

Special thanks to our host WO Patrick Philippeaux for this incredible opportunity.

Join Antonio Michael Downing and host Shannon McGrady at the Museum of Dufferin Saturday April 25th for a meet and greet, Book sale and signing with this incredible author.

Antonio Michael Downing is the author of the acclaimed memoir "Saga Boy" and the children’s book, "Stars in My Crown". You will know him from Saturday afternoons on CBC Radio as he is the current host of the CBC Radio program The Next Chapter where he discusses books with authors and columnists. He spends his time writing books, singing songs, and trying to make his grandma proud. Antonio Michael's rich storytelling shines through in his debut novel "Black Cherokee".

"Queenie meets Frying Plantain in this courageous coming-of-age story, set in the 1990s, about a mixed-race Black girl fighting for recognition in a South Carolina Cherokee community that refuses to accept her ancestry as legitimate. With dazzling language, keen insight, and an unforgettable voice, Black Cherokee is not only an astonishing novel but a profound meditation on race, identity, and coming of age from a major literary talent." - Publisher

Celebrating the power of music, and community ✊🏾🎶

At this special Black History event, and joined a talented guitarist to perform Redemption Song; a powerful reminder of resilience, unity, and the strength of our voices. Through music and storytelling, the night highlighted the importance of uplifting Black youth and empowering our community.

Shelburne’s history and future are shaped by the creativity, leadership, and influence of the Black community. Moments like these remind us that when we come together, we inspire the next generation to rise, lead, and keep the legacy alive. 🖤✨

As we continue to reflect on this year's Black History Month Event let's continue to carry the legacy forward of those who paved the way for us. Those leaders whose names may be lost to time and the ones who continue lead boldly and break barriers.
