PRESS RELEASE
Maritime Fishermen's Union welcomes federal Conservative announcement regarding a plan to protect Canada's fisheries
and awaits the Liberal Party of Canada's position on the matter
Shediac, April 16, 2025 - "Finally, some people are listening!" With these words, Réjean Comeau, president of the Maritime Fishermen's Union (MFU), welcomed the announcement by the Conservative Party of Canada that it would be proposing a plan to protect Canada's fisheries if it formed the next government.
"Our members have been making a lot of noise over the past few weeks. Candidates and parties have two choices: blame us and tell us we're disruptive or listen to us and find ways to save our industry. At this point, we've had a reaction from only one of the major federal parties. Our members eagerly await the Liberal Party of Canada's position," explains Réjean Comeau.
Fishing seasons for a reason
In mid-March, the MFU launched the Fishing Seasons For A Reason campaign to call on all political parties and candidates in the federal election. Inshore fishermen, members of the MFU, and members of other associations are working hard to make the candidates, and the next government understand that urgent action is needed to preserve the inshore fishery and ensure the economic survival of the regions that depend on it.
"The Conservative Party's position confirms that our message is getting through and that we are speaking out on this issue. Our members are wondering why the other federal parties are turning a deaf ear. Conservative candidates don't have access to information unavailable to others. There are two weeks left before the election. We invite the Liberal leader, Mr. Mark Carney, to answer our questions," concludes the MFU president.
