Dear Toronto,
You spoke up for your city, your environment, your land and your quality of life. You saved your waterfront and public spaces.
"It's Billy Bishop for Alto" a government insider notes. The Star calls it a "controversial 300km/h train slashing through farmland in rural Ontario." Did you know Alto's High Speed Train will also slash through Toronto?
We need you again!
135,000 of you wrote the Prime Minister. 87,000 of you responded to online polls. Rural Ontario and Quebec have been fighting for 6 months. We are running out of time and are calling on you once again to stand up, use your voice, pen a letter (or 2!) and let the federal government know we oppose Alto.
The government has granted themselves exceptional powers through Bill C15 for expropriating lands from property owners, farms, towns, conservations, and anything and everything that stands in their way. The Endangered Species Act has been repealed with provincial Bill C5. Productive, generational farmlands responsible for feeding our nation will be fragmented, whole communities cut in half, and there will be permanent, negative effects on watercourses, migration patterns, animal habitat, and the peaceful, rural way of life.
This isn't a normal train. The corridor is 1000km long and a minimum of 200 feet wide not including service roads, fire mitigation, electrical facilities, stations and maintenance buildings. Noise and vibrations will travel for hundreds of feet beyond that. Due to the 300km/h speed there can be no level crossings and it requires a 12 foot fence on either side of the tracks.
This 90 billion dollar project has no business case and will cost every Canadian tax paying family $6000, at best.
The final route alignment for the Alto HSR is set to be announced this fall. Alto wants to destroy our environment and our farms and displace the families that have steward the land and worked hard to build a life and a legacy across Ontario and Quebec for generations. How many Toronto residents will be displaced? Are you in the corridor?
We have weeks left to be loud and take action. Please join the fight.
