Villages Beautiful Central Frontenac

Villages Beautiful Central Frontenac Villages Beautiful is a Committee of Volunteers who fundraise for Village beautification projects. How? There’s a connection. by Sally Angle

Every year plants and flowers spring up in all sorts of places beautifying our surroundings. Some of these are the result of gardeners taking pride in their properties, but some appear in public places. Remember The Festival of Trees and money you spent on tickets hoping to take home a tree or other Christmas object? The same folk who bring you that festival are the folks who contribute to the blo

ssoming of our villages. Along with a number of other volunteers, they see that flowers are purchased, planted or hung, watered and weeded; that the beds, boxes and barrels are kept in repair; public benches are spread throughout the villages; and new trees are planted. Parham, Tichborne, Crow Lake, Sharbot Lake, Clarendon, Mountain Grove and Arden each share the money raised and has a slate of volunteers who do the work. This group of volunteers continue watering and weeding throughout the summer. So next time you admire the flowers and plantings in the public places of the villages, thank the many volunteers of “Villages Beautiful”.

We owe a very special thankyou to Central Frontenac Ward 3 COUNCILLOR SUSAN IRWIN for working dilligently to help Villages Beautiful acquire some financial support from our Township of Central Frontenac this year for the first time in our Committee's 20+ year history.
Susan is the only Councillor who has made an effort to attend some of our meetings over the past year and who saw the benefit of the many important things we do for our community and therefore agreed with our Committee about the need to act as a liaison between VB Volunteer Committee and Town Council to acquire a bit of funding to help us with our Villages beautification projects. Normally all the funding must come from our own fundraising events we do throughout the year, primarily the Festival of Trees near Christmas time. These events are ALOT of hard work and organized & conducted by volunteers on our Committee with help from some non committee volunteers. This funding from our Township was distributed among all our key Villages in Central Frontenac to help with summer beautification initiatives, to make our Villages look attractive to residents, cottagers & tourists. It also enabled us for the first time ever to acquire a watering contract for the hanging baskets we do on the Sharbot Lake Causeway, which are high up & require a truck with a hose to water. Each year it's getting harder for us to get volunteers to water all the gardens and plant pots we plant & maintain in our Villages, especially in Sharbot Lake where there are multiple to water throughout the Village.
After working along with Susan for sometime now, we see her as very hard working, knowledgeable, and dedicated Councillor who is genuinely passionate about serving our Community, in many different facets. Her years of experience show off her skills as as Councillor who understands the needs of our Villages and as an individual with a high degree of honesty, logic, common sense and integrity. Not only that, she is a wonderful & kind person.
Thankyou Susan for everything you've done over the years and continue to do for our Community!
And a special thank you to Township of Central Frontenac for offering us this much needed support. We appreciate it very much.

Our annual Spring "work party" for weeding/clean out & new planting of Fossey Park circular garden on Elizabeth St., Sharbot Lake this past Friday morning May 22nd, 2026.
Forgive us for the long post but we have many people to thank.
We were absolutely thrilled with the huge increase in volunteers who came out to help, 16 in total, compared to just 5 last year!! WOW! A great indication our community is finally becoming more aware of Villages Beautiful Committee & wanting to get involved to help with important initiatives & beautification projects we do in our Villages.
Our self promotion & raising awareness of Villages Beautiful over the past 2 years through social media and word of mouth is finally paying off. So we'll continue on our path of being the Queens of self promotion!
We want to extend our heartfelt thank you to all the Volunteers who came out, brought their gardening tools, got their hands dirty & really put their passion into making Fossey park look amazing for this season. What a wonderful & generous group of people you are! Kudos to all of you, your help is so appreciated! These beautification projects would not happen at all without community volunteers! It was a fun morning filled with not just work, but lots of great conversations, laughs, & nice people getting to know each other. We were impressed with the great community spirit!!
A special thank you to our Volunteer Committee Chair, Debbie Waite, for organizing this work party, buying all the plants, and pulling together a design using AI to transform it into a Perennial garden, for lower maintenance & to save us money each Spring considering the high cost of annuals now. Debbie is a very hard working Volunteer who gives an incredible amount of her time to Villages Beautiful and our community. She may be a little wee person but she's an energetic spitfire, who is passionate about Villages Beautiful. Great things come in small packages!
Funding for our gardening beautification projects come from the fundraising events we do, mainly the annual Festival of Trees we organize & put on each year around Christmas time.
We raise our own money & manage our own budget. However we must thank the Township of Central Frontenac for giving our Committee a bit of financial help this year for the first time in the 20+ history Villages Beautiful has existed. Special thank you to Town Councillor Susan Irwin for working with our Committee & town Council to acquire this funding. You're a great leader & liason, with skill, talent, great people skills, a wonderful person & an excellent Town Councillor who is a huge asset to Central Frontenac. Susan sees the value in what we do for our Villages & after attending some Villages Beautiful Committee meetings recognized that our Township needs to start contributing to the cost of our beautification projects that benefit our Villages.
We hope our community residents & cottagers enjoy our beautification project in Fossey park this summer!

As part of the many Villages beautification projects we do in Sharbot Lake and our other key Villages in Central Frontenac, every spring Villages Beautiful Committee Volunteer members along with non Committee volunteers, plant the large circular garden in Fossey park on Elizabeth St in Sharbot Lake to beautify the entrance to the business section of the town. We thought residents and cottagers would be interested in reading a short story about the history of this park and the people it is named after.
We thank Dianne Lake of the Sharbot Lake Historical Society for obliging our request and providing us with this story and accompanying photo. Dianne is a real asset to our Community as an incredible fountain of knowledge about the history of the Village of Sharbot Lake and area. She is an amazing person to talk to if you ever want to know anything and everything about it!
Stay tuned for photos of yesterday's Fossey park annual gardening work party!

Villages Beautiful Committee volunteer members will be doing a Spring weeding & new season planting of the large circular garden in Fossey park tomorrow morning Fri May 22nd 2026, 9:30am. This feature garden in Sharbot Lake is part of our annual Villages beautification projects. If you're passing by please honk or wave hello in support! Better yet, come in your gardening clothes, bring gloves, trowel, etc & help us out!
We plan to put in more Perennials than annuals this year to cut back on flower costs and upkeep.
Photos from our May 2025 "work party" for this garden. Six Volunteers were Debbie Waite (Committee chair), Linda Harding-DeVries (Committee member), Cheryl Johnson (Committee member), and non Committee volunteers Rhonda Kimberley-Young, Bob Young, & Joan Hollywood.
Stay tuned for photos of our completed work from tomorrow, accompanied by a really interesting short story on the history of Fossey park provided to us by the Dianne Lake of the Sharbot Lake Historical Society!

Make sure you check out the Sharbot Lake History display today & tomorrow at Oso Hall, which Villages Beautiful contributed some help to! It's a must! A fascinating display that took the Sharbot Lake Historical Society Committee if volunteers two yrs of hard work & dedication to research & develop. There's also a fantastic book available to buy at the display for $30 cash called "History of Sharbot Lake Village 1875-2025" which contains much of what you'll see in the display.
The display (& the book) shows the history of the older homes & buildings, railway sites in our town, & the history of deeded owners, & much much more.
When our photographer attended this afternoon she was told they'd already had about 100 people through! The response from the Community has been really good so far.

Last Fall the Land O' Lakes Tourism building at the Sharbot Lake beach was demolished by a company contracted out to by our Township of Central Frontenac Public Works Dept. to make way for construction of the new public washroom facility. The 2 tall planter pots (shown in photo with red flowers) owned, planted annually in front of the building to create curb appeal & also maintained by Villages Beautiful, went missing in the process and have not been found or returned to us. We have inquired with our Public Works dept as to their whereabouts but unfortunately haven't received any information thus far. Had we known the building was slated for demolition we would have removed our pots in advance.
If anyone knows where the pots are, can you please PM us. They were fairly expensive and were paid for by Villages Beautiful with money raised in our annual Festival of Trees fundraising event.
Any help finding them would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

Happy Monday everyone!
Spring is officially here! The days are getting milder, snow is melting, the birds are returning & starting to sing a little. Oh how wonderful the sounds of Spring are after a long, cold winter!
The time is getting closer to when our Committee of Volunteers will be planting beautiful flowers in our community gardens to create beautification and curb appeal for residents, cottagers & tourists to enjoy this summer!
