Trees were planted in Sedgewick Lions Park to honor newborn babies a few years ago. Our Lions Club has since replaced the trees that did not survive with the assistance of Crystal Springs Wholesale Trees.

We appreciate the participation of 13 children in our Vision Screening today. The screening identified two children, ages two and 11, who require further evaluation. We are grateful to Barb and the Sedgewick Library for the use of their facility. We plan to offer additional Vision Screenings in the future and look forward to serving more children.

Sedgewick Lions Club will be conducting Free Vision Screening for children ages 6 months to 12 years old.
Date: April 23 rd
Time: 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Place : Sedgewick Library (4806-47 street)

The screening detects the following key eye problems:
Amblyopia Risk Factors (Lazy Eye): This is the primary concern, as it can become permanent if not treated early (by age 7).
Myopia (Nearsightedness): Difficulty seeing objects at a distance.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness): Difficulty seeing close objects, which can also cause eye crossing.
Astigmatism: Blurred vision caused by an irregular corneal or lens shape.
Anisometropia: A significant difference in refractive power between the two eyes, which causes the brain to favor one eye and ignore the other.
Strabismus (Misaligned Eyes): Eyes that cross (focus inward) or wander (focus outward).
Anisocoria (Unequal Pupil Size): A difference in the size of the pupils, which can sometimes indicate a more serious underlying health concern.
Media Opacities: Potential issues like cataracts or corneal scars.
Eyelid Droop: Potential obstructions that can affect vision.

Key Aspects of Lions Vision Screening:
Not a Diagnostic Tool: The screening identifies potential issues and provides a report, but it is not a complete eye exam and does not replace a visit to an eye care professional.
High Accuracy: The screening devices are reported to have roughly 80% sensitivity and 95% accuracy in detecting these risk factors.
Goal: The primary goal is early detection to treat conditions before they become permanent.

The camera used is a specialized portable handheld device designed to help Lions quickly and easily detect vision issues on patients from 6 months of age through 12 years old .
