Started out as an annual event but for the last 20 or so years is now hosted bi-annually. Let us start with giving you a brief history of this wonderful sport as well as a run down of what you will be seeing at our show. It has been said that wood chopping originally started in Australia in 1870 as the result of a bet between 2 men in a bar in Ulverstone, Tasmania. They had wagered £25 to see who
could fall a tree the fastest. That being said, it is also rumoured to be the first sport in the country of Australia. Many axemen today still work within the timber industry, which is of course no longer reliant on manpower for harvesting. The traditional events of lumberjack competition are a tribute to the heritage of our logging industry. As the years have passed the sport has developed into a much more sophisticated affair and is practiced in many countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Austria, Germany, England, Norway, Switzerland, USA and Canada. Some of the events that you will see at North Shuswap Timberdays include: Standing Butcher block chop, Underhand chop, Axe throwing, Crosscut sawing, Chainsaw races, Obstacle pole racing, and Springboard chopping. Featuring novice, intermediate and open events.
