Be a species champion! Consider a donation to the ORMLT to help native species return. By protecting and stewarding properties across the moraine, we’re providing habitat for species at risk, like the Monarch butterfly.

Did you know that May 31 to June 6 is Canadian Environment Week? To celebrate, we’d like to share some exciting developments from the ORMLT’s stewardship team!

Over the past month, the monitoring team visited 20 properties, totaling 1828 acres.

They observed two species at risk: the Bobolink and the Eastern Meadowlark!

They’ve also observed new species on properties where they haven’t been documented previously, like Bebb’s Willow (Salix bebbiana) and the Virginia Ctenucha Moth (Ctenucha virginica).

To top it off, more of the team got involved in special stewardship days, taking on tasks like the removal of Common Buckthorn!

If you’d like to get involved in the work we do, we’d love to hear from you. Reach out to [email protected], or visit our website at oakridgesmoraine.org!

This month, we’ll be taking a look at the diverse pollinators that live on the moraine, from bees to butterflies, and many different species in between!

Starting off with one of our most recognisable pollinators - have you seen your first bumblebee of the year? These fuzzy garden fliers are always a happy sight, but at least 4 Ontario bumblebee species are declining due to habitat loss and changing weather patterns that alter when flowers bloom. To support bumblebees, consider adding native plants to your garden, which often provide more nutrients than non-native alternatives. Don’t forget to include early-blooming flowers, to provide food to queens when they emerge from their winter hibernation!

The size, shape, scent, and colour of a flower can tell us a lot about how it gets pollinated. Where bright colours and strong scents attract animal pollinators, from hummingbirds to insects, small, unobtrusive flowers often rely on wind. You can likely also think of some plants whose seeds hitchhike on fur or clothes! Can you guess how these flowers are pollinated?

Earlier this month, we saw how ORMLT staff are pulling up invasive periwinkle (Vinca minor) during property monitoring visits. If you’re stuck trying to find native alternatives to plant instead of periwinkle, here are a few ideas! There are all shade-tolerant, evergreen plants with beautiful glossy leaves!

1. Partridgeberry (Mitchella repens)
2. Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens)
3. Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi)

Have you ever seen a ? These tiny arachnids are active hunters of small insects (including garden pests!). Instead of building a web, they stalk and leap on their prey.

Did you know that early Anise Hyssop leaves may have a purple tinge in the spring?

Anise Hyssop is a native perennial with purple flowers that bloom in summer. When crushed, the leaves release a strong fragrance of licorice. It is tolerant of drought and attractive to many pollinators, making it a great addition to a native flower garden!

An Eastern Cottontail rabbit made a tasty snack of this Striped Maple over the winter! Luckily, many native plants are able to bounce back after browsing (second image).

Did you know that the stripes on a Striped Maple’s bark allow it to photosynthesize better in the shade and thrive as an understory tree?

Lets take a look at some of the species that you are helping to thrive, by supporting the Oak Ridges Moraine Land Trust!

The moraine has an incredibly rich diversity of birds, from aerial acrobats like Barn Swallows, relying on open meadow habitat, to forest specialists like the Eastern Meadowlark, seeking out healthy, interior forest.

Every contribution, big or small, makes a real difference. Even a small donation today can help support these incredible species by supporting land protection and stewardship. Your generosity helps protect fragile habitats, support vital conservation efforts, and give vulnerable species the care they need to recover.

If you’ve been thinking about giving, now is the perfect time. Every bit truly counts.

Thank you for being part of this movement to protect what can’t speak for itself.
