Fraud is the number one crime against older Canadians, and newcomer seniors face even greater risk.

Con artists know that many older newcomers may be less familiar with Canadian systems, more trusting of authority figures, and less likely to report when something goes wrong out of fear or embarrassment.

Here's what to watch for:

Someone calls claiming to be from the CRA, Service Canada, or your bank. They say there's a problem and ask for your SIN, banking details, or immediate payment. That's a scam.

If you get a call or visit you didn't expect, you don't have to respond right away. Hang up. Call the organization directly using a number you find yourself.

Report fraud to your local police or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Share this with someone who needs it.

Our EHDS team is proud to share some highlights from recent community gathering hosted on 10th May 2026.

From senior newcomers to young mothers, more than 50 members of our community showed up with hope, excitement and unwavering support. We had the chance to hear the concerns that our community faces including racism, mental health and barriers to employment.

We want to appreciate our gratitude to Sree Nallamothu from the Toronto Neighbourhood Centres for supporting us in this initiative. We would also like to thank DeshDental for their insightful discussion on the importance of dental hygiene and care.

The response, love, and overall success of the event went far beyond our imagination. We truly believe that the strongest communities are built when organizations, people, and ideas come together with purpose and compassion.

AI fraud is rising fast, but not everyone faces the same level of risk.

In the Danforth community, seniors living alone and newcomers navigating unfamiliar systems are especially vulnerable. While concern is high across Canada, targeted awareness and protection in these communities remain limited.

It is time to shift from reacting to fraud to preventing it where it matters most.
