The Canadian Tamil Sports Association (CTSA) stands in solidarity with Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and supports her right to proudly name and express her Eelam Tamil identity.
For generations of Eelam Tamils in Canada, our identity has travelled with us through our language, culture, traditions, community and the stories passed from one generation to the next. For our youth especially, sport has become another space where that identity, belonging and sense of community continue to grow.
At CTSA, we have witnessed generations of Tamil youth come together on the field not only as athletes, but as a community. We believe every young person should be able to speak openly about their heritage and identify themselves in the words that reflect who they are.
To Maitreyi Ramakrishnan thank you for speaking openly and standing firmly in your identity.
To our Tamil youth, carry your language, culture, heritage and story with pride. On the field, in your communities and wherever life takes you.
Our identity is ours to name.
Our heritage is ours to carry forward.
We are proudly Eelam Tamil.
