The War Amps Helping Canadian amputees since 1918 by funding artificial limbs and advocating for their rights.

A philosophy of “amputees helping amputees” has been the hallmark of The War Amps since 1918, when the organization was founded by amputee war veterans returning home from the First World War. Our programs have grown over the years from assisting war amputees – whom we still serve – to all amputees, including children. It is thanks to donors like you that all our programs are possible. Our aims an

d objectives are to:

• Provide financial assistance to amputees for their artificial limbs
• Educate amputees with information on artificial limbs and all aspects of living with amputation
• Encourage child amputees to develop a positive approach to amputation through comprehensive programs including tools for future independence
• Assist war amputees and seriously disabled veterans access pension benefits and wellness programs
• Advocate for the rights and interests of all amputees
• Employ amputees and others with disabilities at the Key Tag Service sheltered workshop and throughout the Association
• Serve the public through the Key Tag Service, PLAYSAFE™ and DRIVESAFE™ programs and Operation Legacy initiatives

The War Amps does not receive government grants; our funding comes from the public’s support of our Key Tag Service. Since it was created in 1946, the Key Tag Service has returned more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys to their owners. Please visit waramps.ca for more information on our programs or to order key tags.

Welcome to the Winner’s Circle! ❤️

This weekend, more than 65 families gathered in Moncton for the 2026 Atlantic CHAMP Seminar.

Through shared experiences, practical advice, laughter and friendship, Champs and their families discovered what being part of the Winner’s Circle is all about: focusing on what is possible, supporting one another and realizing that they are never alone.

As the seminar comes to a close, families leave with new skills, new memories and the confidence that comes from being part of a community that understands.

Thank you to those who joined us and made this weekend extra special. 🫶

This is what your support can look like in a child’s life.

Through the CHAMP Program, child amputees are not only provided with essential artificial limbs—they are also given the opportunity to connect, grow, and build confidence as they navigate the world around them.

From trying something new to gaining independence to simply feeling understood, these moments matter.

Legacy giving helps make these moments possible for children today and for those still to come.

An Okotoks boy recently had the chance to connect with other amputees like him.

The recent CHAMP seminar in Edmonton helps remind kids like Frank they’re not alone, bringing together amputees from across Canada to connect.

What if a small adjustment could make a big difference?

For Cindy, finding a comfortable prosthetic fit was a daily challenge, especially as her residual limb changes throughout the day.

“I had to wear stockings in addition to my regular socket, which caused chafing, pain, and sometimes even soreness.”

After trying different solutions, she now uses an artificial limb with an adjustable feature that allows her to easily adapt the fit throughout the day.

“By turning the dial, the cord tightens against the residual limb, resulting in a better fit and greater comfort.”

A simple change, but one that has made a meaningful impact.

What does it mean to leave a legacy?

Since 1918, The War Amps has supported amputees across Canada, helping children grow with confidence, independence, and a sense of community.

That support continues because of people like you who choose to give back in meaningful ways. ❤️

One way to do that is by leaving a gift in your will, helping ensure that future generations of young amputees receive essential artificial limbs, peer support, and lifelong support through programs like CHAMP.

It is not just about giving—it is about continuing something that matters.

As Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month draws to a close, Annelise Petlock, Director, General Counsel and Member Programs at The War Amps, reflects on the realities of living with an amputation and the gaps in support that still exist within public health care and private insurance:

“Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month should not just be a banner on the calendar – it should be a time for decision-makers to consider how their funding guidelines can be brought up to date to cover essential artificial limbs and specialized devices, and ensure that amputees have affordable access to the prosthetic care prescribed by their medical team.”

Strong moves and even stronger determination! 🥋

Kenzie loves staying active, and karate is one of the many ways she gets to move, learn, and have fun.

With the help of an artificial limb designed for floor activities, she can fully participate, build her skills, and take on new challenges with confidence.

With your support, more children can access the tools they need to thrive!

For many amputees, artificial limbs are essential for independence and safety.

But access is not equal.

Many Canadians would be shocked to learn that artificial limbs are not fully covered by private insurance or public health care—and in some provinces, there is no funding available at all.

Even when funding exists, it often falls short. Policies may limit how often a limb can be replaced, exclude essential components, or leave amputees covering significant costs out of pocket.

The War Amps helps fill these gaps where we can, but as a charity, we cannot replace the need for consistent and equitable funding across Canada.

For those who need them, artificial limbs are not optional. They are essential for independence, safety and overall health.

Through our Advocacy Program, we work on behalf of amputees facing barriers to care, funding and access, helping them navigate systems, challenge decisions, and secure the support they need.

A tiny “fish" making a big impact. 🐟🎻

Meet Mireille, who has been playing the violin since kindergarten — and doing it beautifully in her own way!

With the help of a small technical aid (affectionately called a “fish”), she is able to hold her bow with confidence, control, and ease.

It is a simple tool, but moments like this show just how powerful the right support can be, giving kids the chance to explore their talents, express themselves, and shine. ✨
