Living in rural South Sudan, Mary Atong felt stuck, unable to grow enough to feed her seven children year round.

Everything changed when Mary joined a church-led Village Savings and Loans (VSL) group in her community.

Through her savings group, Mary learned how to save, borrow, and invest in her business in ways that could help her family build a more secure future.

Using a small loan borrowed from her group, Mary grew groundnuts to provide food and income for her family.

As her confidence and business skills grew, Mary saw an opportunity to earn more on her harvest.

Rather than selling groundnuts on their own, she processed them into a paste, which sold for a higher price at the market.

Today, Mary can feed her children and continue growing her business. With the support of her savings group, new skills, and confidence, she is building a brighter future for her family.

Clambering onto their neighbour’s terrace, Shylaja turned around seconds before watching a landslide tear into her home in India. She stood next to her husband and three children with nothing but the clothes off of their backs, and wondered what she could possibly do next.

Her sewing machine—her livelihood—was destroyed. Her savings for her daughter’s upcoming wedding was washed away. What could she do? Her and her family lived in a relief camp for a month, until the government moved them to a rented house. The future seemed bleak.

But when Tearfund’s partner, EFICOR, provided a new sewing machine for her, she was able to get back on her feet. Her hands fell back into the familiar thrum of sewing, and she was able to begin to provide for herself and her family once again.

Tearfund helps those affected by disasters with long-term solutions to help lift themselves out of poverty.
