Canadian Peregrine Foundation

Canadian Peregrine Foundation This page is dedicated to the restoration, recovery and monitoring work of the CPF with raptor species at risk.

The Canadian Peregrine foundation was created in 1997. The establishment of the organization was due to the excitement of a pair of Peregrine Falcons which successfully nested in Downtown Toronto; this was groundbreaking because they were the first pair to nest in southern Ontario in 30 years. Since that historic year the Canadian Peregrine Foundation has been dedicated to helping the populations

of Peregrines rebound to sustainable levels. Although Peregrines are no longer endangered they are still classified as a species at risk, thus there numbers are low and require help establishing healthy populations. While the Canadian Peregrine Foundation no longer operates as a charitable organization, it remains active in southern Ontario through volunteer efforts in monitoring and banding Peregrines in southern Ontario.

Hello everyone! I realize how behind I am in recent news with hatches happening at nest sites all around southern Ontario and beyond. I am currently away in Europe and unable to really keep up with the news I’m afraid. What’s great is that we have so many Eagle eyed folks out there keeping tabs on all of the birds and reporting. Please do follow the Friends of Canadian Peregrine Foundation as they post quite regularly and I will update as soon as I have a stable connection. What I can tell you is, there are hatches at Lake Ridge Hospital in Oshawa, Islington and Bloor have four and and hatches have also occurred at Duncan Mill Road. Lots of babies to look forward to!

Some very sad news from the Friends of Canadian Peregrine Foundation regarding the long standing matriarch at MEC. Midnight is gone. She was an absolutely incredible female that I first found as a sub adult chasing squirrels in Brampton. The MEC site is such a difficult one to hold as a territorial adult as it is on a flight path so there is tons of peregrine traffic during migration. It is also such a well sought after site. Midnight will now join the ranks of so many that have called MEC their home. Fly free you incredibly beautiful lady.

The new year starts off with some fantastic news from Fort Erie. A gentleman wrote to me about a falcon he photographed having a meal where an Alpha Numeric band number was showing. Even though the second letter is faded right out, it is very likely to be none other than Gleig, a female hatched in Hamilton in 2009! She is the resident female at the Buffalo Central Terminal not more than half a dozen miles away which is why I feel confident it is her. Thank you ever so much to Moe Giroux for the sighting and use of his spectacular photos! Also thank you to Kathy Majick for helping me with her ID while I was at work and away from my computer. Great news to start the year with 17 year old Gleig!!!
