Every girl deserves the chance to dream about her future.

But for many girls, the journey is not that simple.

Sometimes it is the family they were born into.
Sometimes it is poverty.
Sometimes it is not having access to the education or basic support they need.
Sometimes, it is growing up without feeling safe enough to dream beyond their circumstances.

And that is why the conversation around the girl child matters.

Because every girl should have the opportunity to ask:

“What do I want to become?”

Not what can I afford to become?
Not what will my circumstances allow me to become?

But what do I want to become?

As we prepare for the International Day of the Girl Child, we want to begin that conversation.

Over the next few days, we’ll be talking about what girls need, the barriers many of them face, and why supporting the girl child cannot be the responsibility of one person or one organisation.

Before we celebrate the girl child, let’s talk about what it really takes to support her.

Seeing the children smile, hearing them speak and watching their confidence made this project even more special for us.

Through our Building Futures Through Education initiative, 100 children received scholarships, while 165 children received new uniforms and learning materials.

For us, it is not just about what was given. It is about helping children overcome the everyday barriers that can interrupt their education and giving them a better chance to remain in school and keep moving forward.

These are the faces and voices behind the numbers.

And they are the reason we do this work.

Education has the power to transform lives, but for many children, that opportunity can be limited by circumstances they did not choose.

In Ilogbo-Ekiti, the cost of staying in school extends far beyond tuition. Uniforms, books, writing materials and other basic requirements can place significant pressure on households already managing limited resources. Over time, these barriers can affect attendance, participation and a child’s ability to progress with confidence.

Our Building Futures Through Education initiative was developed to help address some of these gaps.

Through the programme, 100 children received scholarships, while 165 children were provided with new school uniforms and essential learning materials.

This gathering marked the formal delivery of that commitment.

It brought together children, families, educators, traditional and community representatives around one shared priority: ensuring that more children have the opportunity to learn, participate and move forward with dignity.

For us, educational access is not defined only by whether a child has a place in a classroom.

It is also about whether that child has the resources to participate fully. Whether financial hardship interrupts their progress. Whether they can show up prepared, included and confident. And whether their circumstances limit the future they are able to imagine.

By reducing some of these pressures, this initiative aims to give children greater stability in their educational journey and families additional support in keeping that journey going.

The impact is reflected not only in the numbers, but in what those numbers represent:

100 opportunities protected.
165 children better equipped to learn.
Families carrying a little less of the financial burden.
And a community investing in the potential of its next generation.

This is the kind of progress we believe in: practical, inclusive and centred on creating fairer opportunities for children to thrive.

Because every child should have the chance to learn, develop their potential and build a future not defined by economic disadvantage.

No child’s potential should be limited by what their family can afford.

In Part 2 of our conversation with Mrs. Ronke Ileola, Proprietress of Confidence Crystal School, she talks about another challenge many families face beyond school fees: the everyday cost of keeping a child in school.

Exercise books. Textbooks. Pencils. Uniforms.

For some families, even these basic things are difficult to provide.

She shares what she sees each school session, children returning without the materials they need, and sometimes without proper uniforms. These may seem like small things, but for a child trying to learn and feel confident in school, they matter.

This is why listening came first for us.

Before deciding how to support the children, we wanted to understand what the school was seeing every day and what the real needs were. What we heard helped shape our response.

Through our Building Futures Through Education initiative, we went beyond scholarships. Alongside providing 100 scholarships, we supported 165 children with new uniforms and essential learning materials, responding directly to some of the needs the school had shared with us.

For us, meaningful support should not start with assumptions. It should start with listening, understanding and then responding in a way that truly helps.

Because keeping a child in school is not only about paying fees. It is also about making sure they have what they need to learn, participate and feel like they belong.

What happens when a child wants to learn, but their family cannot afford the fees?

In Ilogbo-Ekiti, one woman has spent years finding a way to keep those children in school. Meet Mrs. Ronke Ileola, Proprietress of Confidence Crystal School.

About ten years ago, she returned to her fatherland and saw children who should have been in classrooms going to the farm instead. In 2015, she decided to do something about it. With very little money but a deep belief in the power of education, she started a school.

Today, about eight in ten of her parents are farmers. Some are widows. Many struggle to afford even the lowest school fees. But when a family cannot pay, she does not simply send the child home. She keeps a notebook. ₦1,000 today. ₦2,000 when they can. Every payment is recorded, no matter how small. Some families have fallen a full year behind, yet their children are still being taught.

We asked her why. Do the parents not want to pay, or simply not have the means?

Her answer was brief: “They don’t have.”

For us at Moel Idu Foundation, listening came before intervention. We wanted to understand the realities facing children, families and educators before deciding how we could help. That conversation helped shape our Building Futures Through Education initiative.

We moved from listening to action: providing 100 scholarships and supporting 165 children with new uniforms and essential learning materials.

Because the story of education is not found in statistics alone. It is found in the child who wants to learn, in the parent doing everything they can to keep that opportunity alive, in the educator who refuses to close the door because a family cannot pay, and in the people who take the time to listen, understand and respond.

This is the story behind the classroom.

In Part 2 of our conversation with Comrade Femi A., General Secretary of the community, the discussion turns to what it truly takes to keep children in school.

He speaks about the need for learning materials, the responsibility of parents and caregivers, and the importance of investing in children’s future. But he also acknowledges a reality we cannot ignore: many families are already living with significant vulnerability and cannot carry that responsibility alone.

This is why listening to different voices within the community matters.

It helps us understand not only what children need, but also the pressures families are facing behind the scenes. Sometimes a parent wants deeply to educate a child, but the resources simply are not there.

For us, that understanding matters.

It reminds us that supporting education is not only about asking families to do more. It is also about communities, institutions and organizations coming together so that a child’s future is not determined by what their family can or cannot afford.
