Today, on the anniversary of her death, we celebrate the vibrant life of bell hooks, an American author and activist whose writings focused deeply on race, feminism, media, history, and class, and perhaps most notably: love. Her life was dedicated to exploring the intersections of oppression in meaningful and groundbreaking ways and her work continues to resonate with activists all around the world, throughout their individual struggles.
Born in 1952, hooks published over 40 books in her lifetime, and her work continues to revolutionize people into justice & love work. In addition to her social activism, bell hooks first became intrigued with Buddhism as a young college student as a result of her interest in beat poetry. She explained that finding her way to Buddhism was a massive part of her personal journey, and that Buddhism re-centered love and spirituality in her life, allowing her to incorporate these concepts into her social activist work.
We admire bell hooksโ determination to do what is right, to advocate for the most marginalized in our society by fighting for their liberation. She worked to carefully untangle the complicated ideas that surround marginalization & community and permitted us a greater understanding of how we can work to create a better, more loving world.
Our team at START benefits from bell hooksโ lifelong work by applying her theories and ideas to our struggle against gendered violence. We are thankful to bell hooks for dedicating her life to the principles of love and liberation that we, as gender justice advocates, are determined to fight for.
Have you read any of hooks' work? Let us know what resonates for you!
