The Saulteaux Club had six volunteers in Wawa this past weekend to help improve the trails between Driftwood Beach and Smoky Point. It was wonderful to meet new hiking friends from Wawa and beyond, and to discover some of the breathtaking trails in that region.

We will have a more extensive report later this week, but this past weekend was considered a resounding success by everyone who attended. There were VTA members from SSM, Hamilton, Timmins and Schreiber travelling to Wawa to help clear the trails of the Michipicoten Voyageur Club.
A quick bit of reckoning put us at around 200 person hours of walking and chainsaw and lopper work on the trails south of town. We are really grateful for the response from the residents of Wawa, led by the indomitable Shirley Hale. These folks have a true passion for enjoying the trails and connecting with nature. Thank you all for your enthusiasm!
A special thank you to Alex Patterson from the Township of Wawa for help in coordinating the event. And to David, Rupert and all of the crew at Naturally Superior Adventures, thank you for your continued support and partnership with the VTA. You went over and above at making us feel welcome and giving us a place to rest at the end of the day.
And one last thank you to Trans Canada Trail, who provided us with a grant that enabled this work weekend to happen. You continue to be a fantastic partner for trail clubs across the country, and we made sure to educate the residents of Wawa of the benefits of having you as a partner as well.
We are all back home and it is safe to say that everyone slept soundly last night. If you love hiking in some rugged conditions with spectacular views of Lake Superior, we can assure you that Wawa has what you are looking for.

Join Us for a Volunteer Work Weekend on the trails of the Michipicoten Club in Wawa!
From May 22nd to 24th fellow Voyageur Trail clubs
will help our friends in Michipicoten (Wawa area).

Since our inception in 1973, the VTA has been proud of the fact that we are 100% volunteer driven. Here is another chance for us to help out a sister Club in need of some trail clearing.
Most work will be near the Lake Superior coastline south of Wawa.
We will have rustic accommodation at the Naturally Superior Adventures facility at the mouth of Michipicoten River.
This is a full weekend commitment, unless you live in Wawa.
Outings are open to member and non-member volunteers.
The work will mainly involve trail brushing and clearing using hand tools,
and repairing or replacing trail markers.
Required chainsaw work will be done by certified operators.
Volunteers should have a reasonable level of fitness.
The bush will still be wet so proper footwear is needed
along with a pair of work gloves.
Below you can sign-up or request a follow-up reminder
for this maintenance event.
As a show of appreciation, a Volunteer Appreciation event
will be held at a later date.
We thank the Trans Canada Trail for its continued support of our trail network by granting the VTA a Trail Care grant to help defray the costs associated with this work party.

We lead busy lives, so we understand that finding time to volunteer may be impossible. But if you can free up just a few moments or a few hours, perhaps you can help out this spring. Here are some different ways:

- Walk a favourite part of the trail this spring and tell us how it's looking.
- Do some light trail work when out for a hike.
- Adopt a favourite trail, making sure it's in great shape throughout the year.
- Join an organized trail maintenance outing (see below)
Events & outreach: community booths, special activities
Communications: photos, social media, short write‑ups
Behind the scenes: computer work, publicity.

Spring Trail Work (Email [email protected] if interested in helping)

The Saulteaux Voyageur Trail Club will be busy again with trail inspections and maintenance this spring, after a hard winter. One maintenance weekend is already in our calendar. On May 22-24, 2026 we'll head to Wawa to help our Michipicoten friends spruce up their trails.
