Happy Friday!
They may be set to a song about angels, but these shrimp-like critters aren’t heavenly beings—they’re freshwater scuds!🦐
Despite their delicate look, scuds are surprisingly tough. They can live in waters that aren’t the cleanest (even polluted!), so they don’t tell us much about water quality.
What they do tell us is how important they are to the ecosystem: they clean up organic matter and algae, and serve as a favourite snack for ducks and other wildlife.

Not quite angels—but still essential little helpers in our waterways!

Check out a few members of our team after some hard work!
This week, our Northern Great Lakes crew will be in Thessalon and Huron Shores, training in biomonitoring methods 🐞🐛🐜
That means bug collections and eDNA samples will be underway!
But why bugs, you ask? You may have learned through following our page, aquatic insects can tell us a lot about the health of our rivers and streams!

Want to learn more about our biomonitoring work? Reach out - we’d love to share!

A special shoutout to Vivek, our new team member! Welcome to the team Vivek!

Water Wednesday!
Check out this little friend enjoying their time just shy of the surface!
If you’re lucky, while water monitoring you may be able to see some aquatic critters! 🐟🐠

Perhaps they are curious about what we are doing or they want to thank us for helping them keep their homes healthy!

If you are interested in seeing some of these friends, become a Water Ranger! 💧Most importantly, when in the field, always remember to respect the lives around us!

Another great event for the NORDIK Water Team!

On August 20, The NORDIK water team partnered with Huron North for a cleanup event at Thessalon’s Peace Park.
Happy to report that despite a number of large events that have been held at the park in recent weeks, very little waste was found!
Kudos to the event organizers and the Thessalon park staff for keeping things s***k and span! Big thanks also to the Huron North group for organizing this event and inviting us to join.

Now that summer is over we are so thankful to everyone who came out to events these past few months to support us!

Remember this little friend?? Well they’re back!🐉🪰
Meet the dragonfly nymph - if you guessed a dragonfly you nailed it! 🐉🪰

Believe it or not, dragonflies spend up to the first 5 years of their short lives underwater! Once they finally emerge, they only spend a few short weeks to zip around in the air before their lifecycle ends.
Even as adults, Dragonflies stick close to the water - it’s where they lay eggs, hunt smaller insects, and enjoy their time in the sun ☀️

Because they’re so tied to the water, dragonflies need clean, healthy ecosystems to thrive. Water pollution can seriously impact them 🗑️ Which makes them awesome bioindicators of water quality! 💧

So if you spot a dragonfly nymph (yes, even with those funny legs) take it as a great sign - your water is likely in excellent shape 💧

Now that you know their name, don't be afraid to say hello 👋🪳💧
